ODS Office Closed for FEI World Cup

April 16th, 2007

Dear ODS Members,

The ODS Office will be closed this week so that I can attend World Cup in Las Vegas.  I will be volunteering in the USDF booth in the Vendor Village, so if you are planning on attending the World Cup, stop by and say hello!

As always, your Board Members and Regional Representatives are available to help you should you have a question or need immediate assistance.  Their contact information is listed on the ODS Website — http://www.oregondressage.com/contact.html

When I return, I will be putting the finishing touches on the ODS Roster, so you have one final chance to get in any advertisements (business card $35, half page $60, full page $100), changes to chapter officer lists, last minute membership updates or contact information updates!

Warmest Regards,

Save the Date - HotV Needs Your Help

April 16th, 2007

Dear ODS Members,

First, a correction to the official website posted in the previous e-mail.  It should be: http://redbrickfarm.net/heart_of_the_valley.htm

As you may know, the Heart of the Valley Dressage Show just added a third arena to our already full and busy show coming up over Mother’s Day weekend (May 12/13, 2007). We are thrilled to be able to offer additional competitors a chance to compete, but adding an arena also increases our work load significantly. WE NEED YOUR HELP!

If you can, PLEASE put our show on your calendar and come spend a few hours volunteering. We have need in all areas at this point and will be happy to work out a good fit for your experience, interests and schedule. We will need the help of several volunteers to make this show a success, especially now that we have added an arena, and I thank you so much for you consideration and support in this matter.

Please contact me with your availability and interests at (541)231-7247 or jennifer.milburn@oregonstate.edu. If you have a horsey friend that can come help out - please bring them as well. Everyone who volunteers for at least 2 hours will receive a thank-you gift from the Mid Valley Chapter, and their name will also entered into a drawing for several great prizes throughout the course of the show (minimum two drawings per day, and you do not have to be present to win).

Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Thank you SO much for your help. See you there!

Show Manager

ODS: HotV Adds Arena, Bumps Closing Date

April 16th, 2007

Dear Heart of the Valley Entrant and all interested parties,

As if you haven’t heard enough from me already! Today I write with what I hope is good news. Due to the overwhelming interest in our show, and in an effort to give participants a chance to compete, the 2007 Heart of the Valley Dressage Show will be adding a third arena to our competition. This will be an outdoor 20M x 60M hog fuel arena, so please come prepared to brave the unpredictable Oregon weather. Kari McClain (R) of Olympia, WA is our tentative third official (we have verbal confirmation and are just waiting on a contract).

We will be bumping our current closing date of 4/14/07 by one week, making our new closing date Saturday, April 21, 2007. We will process all entries in postmark order, as indicated in our prize list, entering our current wait list in draw order first. If we cannot accommodate our wait list and all new entries we receive in the time available, we will again hold a lottery beginning with the postmark date on which the show fills. If this lottery becomes necessary, we will announce the date and time over e-mail and on our official show website, www.redbrickfarm.net.

We very much hope to be able to accommodate all entries and provide a great show experience for you all. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me at (541)231-7247 or jennifer.milburn@oregonstate.edu.

Thank you again for your interest in, and support of our show. Hope to see you soon!

Warmest regards,

Jennifer Milburn
Show Manager

Jeremy Steinberg and Parocco invited to the Federation Equestrian International (FEI) World Cup Invitational

April 12th, 2007

Jeremy Steinberg, a member of the Oregon Dressage Society (ODS) since 2003, has been invited to compete with Parocco in the FEI World Cup Invitational, to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada on Friday, April 20, 2007.

The FEI World Cup Invitational is open to six horses based on world and national ranking and scores from the US League Finals Freestyle Championships held March 31 and April 1 in Burbank, California, where Steinberg came in a respectable 6th place with a 67.800%. Steinberg received word of his invitation from Glenda McElroy, the organizer of the show, last Tuesday. At the World Cup Invitational he will ride a Grand Prix test.

31 year old Steinberg is a dressage instructor and trainer based out of Seattle, WA. He began riding at the age of 11 and at the age of 17 rode his first Grand Prix test. Steinberg has a long list of career highlights, including winning Individual Gold and Team Silver at the North American Young Rider Championships in 1996, multiple United States Dressage Federation (USDF) Region IV and ODS Championships and the professional honor of running US Olympian Robert Dover’s business in Wellington, Florida while Dover was competing abroad.

Steinberg has trained with dressage greats such as Dietrich von Hopfgarten, Guenter Siedel, Debbie McDonald, Robert Dover and Klaus Balkenhol. Steinberg has a busy clinic schedule teaching non-horse show weekends in locations such as Sherwood, OR, Billings, MT, Victoria, B.C. and other locations up and down the west coast.

Parocco is a 18-year-old Wurtenberg gelding owned by Jennifer Smith. Steinberg has known Parocco since he was 4 years old, however it was not until 2002 when he started training the horse, first showing at the Prix St. Georges level. “He’d been ridden by many different people at this stage and no one really believed he would make it to Grand Prix. I took it as a challenge. He has endeared himself to me forever because of his incredible kindness and heart. Parocco is one of the most forgiving and loving horses I have ever had the privilege of working with.”

“The World Cup will be Parocco’s last competition. The event itself is a huge honor to get to compete in, however, to retire him at such a big event in front of the world is even more special” said Steinberg. “He has put his heart into every test he’s competed in that it seems only fitting to retire him on such a high note.”

The World Cup Invitational competition will be held Friday during the FEI World Cup Finals. First held in 1986, the FEI World Cup Dressage Final has been held in the U.S. only twice, in 1995 in Los Angeles and 2005 in Las Vegas. The Netherlands has dominated the FEI World Cup Dressage competition, winning seven times, followed by Germany with six. The United States won its first title in 2003 when Debbie McDonald rode Brentina to the Championship. Brentina is owned by Parry and Peggy Thomas of Las Vegas, for whom the Thomas & Mack Center, the venue for the World Cup Finals, is named.

Founded in 1971, the Oregon Dressage Society is the third largest Group Member Organization of the United States Dressage Federation. The Oregon Dressage Society exists to educate, promote and inspire its members and the general public through publications, programs and competitions, in a way that enhances the image of dressage and promotes the welfare of the horse. FVC Show is overfilled and headed for a lottery

April 11th, 2007

The Ft. Vancouver Dressage Show, June 1-3, 2007, received more dressage entries on opening day than can be accommodated. Therefore, in accordance with USEF GR1510.3.a, a lottery (drawing) will be held to determine which entries will receive rides and the wait list order for the remainder.

This drawing will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, at the Clark County Fairgrounds Equestrian Building.

As of Saturday, April 7, the waiting lists for Friday and Saturday were 4 and 5 hours long, respectively. Further dressage entries are discouraged.

Entries are still welcome for the DSHB classes to be held on Sunday, June 3! Closing date is May 2, although prospective exhibitors are reminded that time is limited, and traditionally that day does fill before closing.

If you have any questions, please contact Kaye Phaneuf, show secretary at phaneuf@canby.com or (503) 651-3037.

Updates to ODS League Championship Qualifying Requirements

April 10th, 2007

The League Championship committee has decided to support developing interest in not only quadrille, as previously announced, but also for Freestyle and Pas de Deux.

As a result, for the 2007 League Championships there will be no qualifying criteria for Freestyle, Pas de Deux or Quadrille. Each Freestyle, Pas de Deux, or Quadrille that enters the Championship show will compete for the Championship.

Please be aware that this will probably change for 2008 as the League Show Program is currently being evaluated and we would welcome input.

Later this week, the ODS Office will be updating the prize list (PDF file) posted to the website including appropriate class numbers in support of these changes to the show.  Please view the prize list by visiting the Omnibus page - www.oregondressage.com/omnibus.html.

Thank you for your interest.

Sincerely,
Marsha Williams
ODS President

April 2007 ODS President Column

April 1st, 2007

By the time you read this column you will have received your ODS rider award plaques for League Shows 2005, Recognized Shows 2005, League Shows 2006. Recognized shows 2006 were mailed in March and should be on the way if not already there. Remember for the 2007 show season you must be a member at the time the scores are earned so be sure to join or renew before your first show so your scores will count.

On the topic of awards it is time also to start thinking about nominations for ODS Special Awards. Special awards are listed in the ODS Roster. The nominations are due by August 10 at the ODS office. During the shows and activities between now and then keep your eyes open for deserving members who exhibit the qualities listed for each of these awards. The awards you may nominate for are:
Mary Ann Judkins Memorial Instructor Award
Teresa Dunlap Trophy-Special Recognition Award
Support Person Extraordinaire Award
Sportsmanship Award
Candidates may be nominated by individuals or groups. A letter describing how the candidate fulfills the criteria of the award must arrive at the ODS office by August 10. Voting will take place by the Special Awards Committee and the awards are presented at the ODS Banquet held during the Championship show.

The ODS Board is sponsoring the Linda Acheson Benefit Show this year. This show is our major fundraiser for the Linda Acheson Education Fund. This year the format will be changed in that on Saturday, August 18 there will be a Practice or Schooling show. The rules for this type of show are printed in the Blue Section of the Omnibus. Sunday, August 19 will be an ODS League Show. This is a great opportunity to get your feet wet if you haven’t tried showing yet as an exhibitor, try a new volunteer job or try a ride at that next level for the more experienced members one day; and, be ready and warmed up for League Competition at the same location the next day. This will be a great opportunity to bring out that young horse (over 36 months of age please) for experience in a “real show environment”. Kim Barker is heading up the show committee. Many volunteers are needed so contact Kim to see what you can do to help for this valuable fund raising effort.

The ODS Show Management and Volunteer Training held in February was even more comprehensive and educational than those held in the past. This is such an important aspect of the educational part of our mission. Show rules change constantly and show management officials need to stay on board with all the current changes. I sincerely thank those involved in putting on this valuable seminar and the presenters: Corinne Stonier, Rose Newman and Kaye Phaneuf. Also a big thank you to Evin Rattner and Noah Rattner for their part in the volunteer training portion of the program and Spike Cornelius for donating his time and expertise. I believe a sequel is planned for the same date next year!

Please feel free to contact me with concerns about ODS issues. See you at the shows!  Marsha
