ODS Breeders Showcase I & II - Call for Volunteers & Sponsors

July 20th, 2007

Hello,

We are looking for sponsors and volunteers for the ODS Breeders Showcase I & II to be held at the Devonwood Equestrian Centre, Sherwood Oregon on August 11th & 12th.
This is the second year of this show. It is an excellent chance for sporthorses to be shown in-hand and under saddle in Materiale during one weekend and have it count for two USDF recognized competitions. As far as volunteering goes, this is a wonderful opportunity for people who find it difficult to schedule volunteering in-between rides during traditional dressage shows. We are still in need of judges transportation, Friday afternoon set-up, scribes, scorers, gate keepers and runners. If you have a few hours to spare, the show committee would appreciate your help.

For this show to be as successful as it was in its inaugural year on and to continue for years to come, we need YOUR help. Our goal is to have every class sponsored and we are a long way from achieving that goal. $25.00 will help sponsor a class for one of the two days. Your sponsorship at this level will have you listed as the class sponsor in the program as well as announcements will be made. $50.00 will give you a sponsorship for a class each day. You will be listed in the program next to the classes you sponsor and multiple announcements will be made. IN ADDITION for sponsoring at the $50 level - you will have a BUSINESS CARD ADVERTISEMENT in the program. There are also other sponsorship and advertising options available - please check the webpage for the Sponsorship Packet.

The deadline for sponsorships and advertisements is August 1st.

We hope that you can help this ODS managed sport horse competition be successful. We thank you in advance for your consideration. Please forward this e-mail to anyone you feel may want to help sponsor or volunteer this competition.

If you have any questions or would like to specify which class you would like to sponsor - please contact Barb Hanel. If you have any questions in regards to volunteering - please contact Rose Newman.

Checks should be made out to “ODS” and sent to: ODS Breeders Group Committee 880 NE 25th Ave, Ste 2-173 Hillsboro OR 97124

E-mail Barb Hanel at warmblood@elkrunfarm.com or call her at (541) 354-1291

E-mail Rose Newman at rose_newman@yahoo.com or call her at (360) 281-6550

Thank you in advance for your help!

USDF Region 6 / ODS Junior/Young Rider Team Championships

July 18th, 2007
EVERYTHING INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW ABOUT the

AUGUST 24, 25 & 26, 2007 - GLISAN STREET SADDLERY

USDF/ODS JUNIOR/YOUNG RIDER TEAM DRESSAGE CHAMPIONSHIPS

When NW Equestrian Center changed ownership many ODS/USDF shows had to be
canceled or find new accommodations. The Junior/Young Rider Team Championship Show was one of the affected shows. But thanks to the generosity of DevonWood Equestrian Centre, one of the premier Dressage facilities in the nation, a very negative situation has been turned into a fabulous change in venue. This will allow Oregon’s High School Team Lettering Program to maintain it’s tradition of starting the new school year with the Jr/YR Show, and it will provide the opportunity to showcase a new program for Oregon’s College students - the Oregon College Student Dressage Team Program.

The change in venue will cost $5.00 more per test than listed in the Omnibus. If you’ve already registered you will be charged $5.00 more per test when you check in. If you haven’t sent in your entries yet, please add $5.00 per class. For most participants, the savings in gas alone will more than make up the difference. For anyone who has ever ridden or has dreamed of riding at DevonWood, the experience alone will be well worth the difference.

The first-ever Oregon College Student Dressage Program will be introduced at this show. There are already enough collegians registered to put together two college teams, and we would love to have many more. So if you or anyone you know is or will be attending an Oregon College or University this fall (community colleges included) and would like to ride for their college on a mixed college team please contact Carol Jackson (503-949-0156).

FOOD - Friday evening is a free pizza party for all participants ($5 each for family and friends). There will be full concessions on the grounds with proceeds going toward College Scholarships. A meal ticket can be purchased for $30.00 which will include breakfast and lunch on Friday, breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday and breakfast and lunch on Sunday. Full details and how to sign-up will be provided to participants approximately the first week of August via email.

SPONSORS. Team sponsors are $50 each, or each team member can chose to pay $12.50 each for each team they show with. Class sponsors for open classes is $25.00, but any amount is welcome (we can combine sponsors). The cost of sponsoring a team is $50. If you’ve already sent in your individual team fee and your team is able to get a team sponsorship, please ask for your refund at the show.

If you know of a vendor who would like a booth at the show, please contact Carol Jackson (503-949-0156). Depending on what is needed, we will negotiate the fee, but I guarantee it will be reasonable.  Vendors must show proof of liability insurance.

VOLUNTEERS are needed (scribes, gate, scoring, announcing, runners, set-up, food table, general runners, etc.). Anything you would be willing to do, for however long you are willing would be GREATLY appreciated. Please contact Carol Jackson (503-949-0156).

FRIDAY &/OR SATURDAY EVENING - Find out how to become a member of a High School Dressage Team and earn your letter in Dressage, how to become an honorary member if you’re not yet in high school, or what the plans are for participating on college teams.

There will be an area on grounds for “people” trailers. The charge will be $5.00 per day for no-hook-up and $10 per day for electricity.

Entries need to be postmarked by July 20, 2007. However, because there will are multiple show arenas available, we are offering additional open classes on Friday and Saturday, so please don’t hesitate to call the show manager if you’d like to add classes if you’ve already mailed in your entry, or add classes to your entry if you haven’t already mailed in your entry. Feel free to call the show manager, Randi Croshaw, with any questions about the additional open classes.

If you have any questions, what-so-ever, about the show please call:

Randi Croshaw: 503-390-1795 (Show Secretary)

Gaye McCabe: 503-378-0309 (Show Manager)

Carol Jackson: 503-949-0156 (High School Team and College Team liaison; volunteer coordinator)

Vacancies in ODS Championship Show Committee and Please Volunteer

July 9th, 2007

Hello everyone! I hope you are all enjoying a wonderful summer and show season. This note is a reminder that the ODS Open & Championship Shows are fast approaching

(August 31 - Sept. 2, 2007 - Labor Day Weekend at DevonWood Equestrian Centre), so please mark your calendars and SAVE THE DATE! If you won’t be joining us as a competitor this year, we would SO appreciate your help as a VOLUNTEER!

Also - this has been a very busy year for everyone, and we still have some gaps in our Championship Show Committee that are VITAL to the success of the shows, and must be filled. If you have a little extra time and are interested in learning more about show management, please consider one of the positions below. It would be a GREAT service to ODS, and you will make many friends and have a great weekend (and you may make a little money to boot).

Volunteer Coordinator: The ODS Open & Championship Shows are still in need of a head Volunteer Coordinator for 2007. This position is responsible for recruiting volunteers for all positions, assigning duties, and attending both shows to man the volunteer check-in booth, hand out needed materials and oversee all volunteer operations. Sound difficult and time consuming? Well - it can be, but you will have the help of your show manager (me) in recruiting, and I have already hired an Assistant Volunteer Coordinator that will be on site for the entire show as your back-up/support person. If you are a people person who won’t take no for an answer (hee hee) PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE consider this important position. The Volunteer Coordinator will be paid $500 for their work on the 2007 shows.

Food Bank Coordinator: The ODS Open & Championship Shows have a great history as a fundraiser for the Oregon Food Bank. This year we are in great need of a volunteer to coordinate these efforts - including picking up food and money collection receptacles to bring to show, working with PR person to get info out about food bank fundraising, and manning collection areas during the show. This position will also see that all food and money donated is returned to the Oregon Food Bank after the show. If you are free for labor day and have a couple of friends or family members that would like to attend the show, please consider this charitable position.

Public Relations: The 2007 shows are still in need of a PR coordinator who will work with Mary Cornelius to develop and distribute the promotional poster, contact local papers and radio stations to get the word out about the show, and basically do anything to increase spectator attendance to DevonWood’s spectacular facility for our fun show.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review this message, and for considering one of these important positions. If you are interested or have any questions/concerns, please contact me at jennifer.milburn@oregonstate.edu or (541)231-7247.

Jennifer Milburn
Show Manager

July President Column

July 1st, 2007

One of the most enjoyable jobs I’ve had while on the ODS Board is serving on the ODS Scholastic Merit Scholarship Selection Committee. We have just selected 5 recipients of the 2007 Scholarship fund. Each will receive a $500.00 scholarship for college. The winners are Barbara Ayers of Cottage Grove, Catherine Pike of Gervais, Magen Pettitt of Estacada, Jamie Hughes of Salem and Denae Martin of Gervais. The Scholarship Fund is generated from the profits of the Dressage for the Ages Show. Last year we were able to award 3 scholarships and this year the show profits provided for 5. The money is raised by the youth and their supporters. The criteria are: Academics, Leadership and Community Service and Extracurricular Activities. The students must also submit essays on a given topic and at least 2 letters of reference. Congratulations to the 2007 winners!

Our two largest League shows, the Adult Team Show and the ODS League Championships have both grown to be full shows this year. The League Championship (which also includes the High School Championship is a two ring show this year). I attended the Team Show for the first time this year and it was really a lot of fun. There were lots of riders fairly new to dressage as well as a few more seasoned horses and riders. The last minute venue change gave us a weekend chock full of surprise distractions but everyone toughed it out and by the second day the horses and riders had become quite seasoned. A delicious lasagna feed was provided for the riders who participated in some interesting games and won prizes. There was a great quadrille performance by a team of Haflingers. The show had great awards for performance and the awards ceremony was quite impressive with all the horses and riders lined up in the arena. Many thanks to Gaye McCabe and her dedicated crew for putting this show on. This year the League Championships is offering an all comers Freestyle and Quadrille competition. There are quite a few Musical Freestyle entries which will be fun for spectators and competitors. The judges are both USEF licensed judges. This show is a great opportunity for league show participants to get a taste of the more formal world of licensed competitions. Thanks to Gaye McCabe, the ODS Board and all the volunteers who have helped to make this program a success.

The ODS Board held a quarterly meeting following the dinner at the Team Show following are a few items from the meeting:

The board members attend 4 meetings per year and a retreat on their own dime. Recently it was suggested ODS pay the board members a travel stipend . We have had trouble getting representation from the far corners of the state due to time and cost of travel and with the rising cost of fuel it has become an issue for all of us including the many committee chairpersons who must attend at least some of the meetings. Treasurer John Craven did a study and calculated an approximate cost. Even with the board members carpooling the cost to ODS would be around $3,000.00 per year. Your board voted not to adopt the stipend because we felt at this time we could not count on increased revenues without raising dues. I hope the over 1,000 other members will express appreciation to the board members for their generous spirit and dedication to the good of the organization. They truly are fabulous, hardworking volunteers and they deserve your support. I know it is very meaningful for me when I get a personal thank you from a member.

A proposal to make some slight changes to the ODS Mission statement was passed by the board and the new statement will appear in the 2008 publications. The By-laws are under revision and a document will be presented to the board for approval at the November meeting. The league show committee will finalize a proposal for formalization of the League show program for the August meeting. So far the board has voted to keep the League Championships limited to Intro through Second Level. The League shows may offer upper level classes but year end awards and championships will not be offered due to the fact that L Graduates are not trained to judge above Second Level. The August Board meeting will be held via e-mail and the next Board meeting and the Annual General Membership meeting will be held in Springfield November 3. If you have concerns, input or comments please contact your regional reps, directors at large or the ODS officers and please plan to attend the General Membership Meeting in November.

Our many licensed competitions are having a successful season! Be sure to get your entries postmarked on the opening day as all the shows are filling quickly. Here’s wishing you good luck and safe travel in the remaining season-see you at the shows!
–Marsha
