Status of other August Dressage Shows Hosted by ODS

August 7th, 2007

There have been no official decisions made in regards to the shows listed below, however, it is the common hope of the Facilities, Show Management and Oregon Dressage Society Staff and Board of Directors that the shows will go on, barring additional confirmed cases of EHV-1.

Other shows in August hosted by ODS are:

  • The ODS Linda Acheson Education Fund Benefit Show, to be held 8/18 & 19 at Lake Oswego Hunt
  • The ODS Junior / Young Rider Team Show, to be held 8/24 - 26 at DevonWood
  • The ODS Open & Championship Show, to be held 8/31 - 9/2 at DevonWood

The only canceled show at this point is the ODS Breeders Showcase, which was to be held this coming weekend at DevonWood.

REFUNDS:

The ODS Omnibus lists refund policies for each individual show and in some sections additionally lists general refund details in the general section pages. Unless a show is canceled by management, refunds will only be made per individual show policy as stated in the ODS Omnibus.

ODS Breeders Showcase Refund Policy: because this show was canceled in an emergency situation, the policy on page D-7 would replace the refund policy listed on page D-24. The policy on page D-7 reads “Read refund policies closely as many shows have different refund policies. Unless stated otherwise, competitions will not refund entry fees in the event of cancellation of classes due to severe weather or other emergency. However, the Breeders Showcase Management, ODS Sport Horse Committee and the ODS Staff and Board of Directors all agree that they would like to refund as much of the entry fees as possible. ODS Staff along with management for this show are working out all of the financial details and will be presenting a plan to the ODS board. After a decision is made, show management will be directly communicating with the competitors regarding refunds from show entry fees within a few days.
ODS Linda Acheson Education Fund Benefit Show Refund Policy: listed on page L-34 “$20 cancellation fee deducted from all refunds. No refunds after closing date without a doctor or vet certificate.
ODS Junior/Young Rider Team Competition Show Refund Policy: listed on page L-38 “Until closing date, all fees refunded, less $20 cancellation fee. 7/20 - 8/1: 50% of fees refunded less $20 cancellation fee if letter from vet or doctor presented. After 8/1: refunds at discretion of the show management committee.
ODS Open & Championship Show Refund Policy: subject to general rules refund policy listed on page R-8. Individual show policy listed on page R-85 “Until closing date: all fees refunded, less $20 cancellation fee. 8/6 - 8/17: all Miscellaneous Fees and Stabling Fees refunded; 50% of Class Fees refunded only when accompanied by a letter from veterinarian or doctor. After 8/17: refunds at discretion of show committee and only when accompanied by a letter from a veterinarian or doctor.
If you have questions about individual show refund policies, please contact the show manager or the person listed on the ODS Website calendar as the official contact person for the show.

Our office will be in continued communication with veterinarians, facilities and show managers over the next few days and will alert our members about the status of the other upcoming shows as soon as we know any further details.

We appreciate your patience.

Show Cancellation Announcement

Monday, August 6, 2007 (HILLSBORO, OR) - The Oregon Dressage Society Breeders Showcase I & II Dressage Sporthorse Competitions have been canceled due to the report of a case of Equine Herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) in the Willamette Valley according to Rose Newman, show manager. “I received a phone call from the owner of DevonWood Equestrian Centre (DWEC) Saturday night and she said that DWEC is executing a self-imposed barn quarantine at the recommendation of the facility’s veterinarian,” said Newman. Barbara Funk, Assistant Show Manger, added “DevonWood is not in quarantine status for having EHV-1, but is closing to outside horses at this time as a precautionary measure in protection of the horses currently stabled there.”

According to the Oregon Department of Agriculture, a first case was reported in March of 2007, but more recently a second case of EHV-1, a highly contagious respiratory virus that can cause paralysis and abortions in pregnant horses, has been reported in Oregon. During this same time, five horses in Washington also exhibit clinical signs that are consistent with EHV-1. All six of these horses attended the same weekend show in Oregon in July, a few days before exhibiting signs of the disease.

“We don’t know of any local dressage horses that are affected by this infectious disease, however, due to the quarantine period for this disease, we will be unable to host the Breeders Showcase Competition this weekend. As more information becomes available, I have asked the ODS Office to post details for information for our members to the news page on the ODS website and will additionally communicate to competitors via e-mail,” stated Newman.

Oregon Department of Agriculture State Veterinarian Dr. Don Hansen said, “Even though EHV-1 is not a regulatory disease, and is not reportable, I am urging horse owners to take precautions. Veterinarians should work closely with their equine clients to develop plans that address the clients’ ability to prevent EHV-1 in their horses. And, if a horse is suspected of having the viral disease, it should be isolated. Equipment should not be shared.”

The Oregon Dressage Society Board of Directors and staff want our members and competitors to know that we will be in communication with veterinarians, facilities and show managers over the next few days and will alert our members about the status of the other upcoming shows as soon as we know any further details. We appreciate your patience.

August President Column

August 1st, 2007

I’m very happy to announce that membership in ODS has passed 1200 so far this year! This is the largest membership number for ODS so far. We are still ranked as the third largest Group Membership Organization of USDF behing California Dressage Society and New England Dressage Association. One reason our membership is growing is because of the excellent programs ODS offers to members including our wonderful Championship Show, the League Show Progam, the variety of youth shows and programs and our educational programs. In order to learn more about what makes ODS go I have attended quite a few of these events so far this year.

I think one of the best things ODS has done is improve service to members by hiring an office manager, first with Joyce Heinke, followed by Cynthia Prater and now with growth a much larger job held by Corinne Stonier. The “office” is the face of ODS to the public and a place a member can go to get questions answered or be directed to someone else for help.

The second thing I have observed which makes ODS go is the highly dedicated group of individuals who hold key volunteer positions and have spent an incredible amount of labor, time and even personal resources to make the programs go and grow. As ODS grows these jobs are getting bigger and we will be recruiting more people to take on a part of this work. We try hard to keep cost down to the members but unless we are able to get help from more members the costs will have to go up for membership, fees and show costs. There are many, many volunteer hours given by members for short term things like working at shows. This is great and appreciated. What I am talking about here are jobs that go on behind the scenes all through the year such as planning and coordinating projects like the L program, Instructor Certification Program, Linda Acheson Education Fund Benefit, key positions for the Championship shows and other shows and educational presentations. If a few people with good organizational skills can step forward to help or replace the existing volunteers the programs can continue and grow as the organization grows.

Speaking of volunteers I have been volunteering a lot this year and have observed the way volunteers are treated by competitors and other participants. Please take the time to thank a volunteer personally for their time and work and please if you have a complaint take it to the person in charge such as the show manager, a board member or committee member. Even if you think a volunteer is doing something incorrectly they are most certainly trying to do a good job and they may not be as familiar with rules and formalities as would be ideal. The goal is for competitors, management and volunteers to all have a positive and safe experience and want to come back.

We were disappointed to learn the Debbie McDonald Clinic planned by Idaho Dressage and Eventing for this fall has been cancelled due to Debbie’s other responsibilities.Tthis would have been a wonderful educational opportunity and many of us were looking forward to it. However, we have learned that George Williams will be the Dressage Clinician at the Horse Expo in Albany, Oregon next spring. This should draw a lot of dressage enthusiasts and gives us another educational opportunity to look forward to.

Please try to attend the ODS Award Banquet on September 1st in conjunction with the ODS Championship Show. You could always volunteer at the show for the day and attend the banquet that evening. It is probably the largest turnout of ODS members for the year and a great chance to socialize.

See you there!

Marsha
