President Column - February 2007
This is the depressing time of year for those of us in the eastern part of the state because the weather is cold, the roads are bad and our goals for the 2007 show season are looking a little over zealous. I’m trying to make good use of this time by making progress on those projects for ODS and USDF that looked a little overwhelming when riding was the big priority.
Next weekend your board will attend the annual Retreat. Our two big issues will be:
Some house keeping in regards to reviewing and updating the ODS By-Laws and Procedures. A presentation has been put together by Donna Thayer our new eastern representative with help from Ed Miller one of our southern reps. One thing we will be looking at is board representation and how to keep it fair and meaningful.
The ODS League Show program, including the League Championship Show and how to make this program available to entry level dressage riders and viable for experienced riders who seek an alternative to the recognized shows and championship program.
No doubt there will be some decisions made on both of these issues at the retreat. However, I am sure I am not the only board member who would appreciate input from any and all of you on these topics. We are serving a vastly diverse community and we want to provide meaningful programs in education, competition and recognition for riders of all levels. Please give us some constructive feedback on your concerns and your ideas. The contact information for each of us is found in this publication and on the ODS website.
There are many educational opportunities coming up soon. Jane Savoie will be presenting a clinic at the Mane Event in Ridgefield, Washington February 9-11. ODS is planning a Show Management training seminar in Wilsonville February 24-25. There are many clinics scheduled for the month of February with local, west coast and nationally known dressage instructors.
On another note I would like to congratulate Helen Ferguson of the North Willamette Valley Chapter on receiving the Gifted Fund Award for Region VI from the Dressage Foundation. The Gifted Fund is a $750.00 award for an adult amateur to use for a dressage education experience with their own horse for a period of at least 5 days. The applicants considered must have a strong volunteer record in dressage. Helen is the treasurer of the ODS Championship show and has been a great contributor to ODS in the years I have known her. The award could not have gone to a more deserving person! Congratulations Helen.
My request to each of you is to set a riding goal for this year, attend at least one dressage educational event, volunteer at least once during the year, and contact your representative or me at least once letting us know what you personally want from ODS and what you have to offer. We would be glad to hear from you!
Marsha
