Call for Volunteers - Heart of the Valley Dressage Shows

April 22nd, 2008

Hello ODS Members!

Its hard to believe that the 2008 dressage show season is already upon us, especially as we have been shivering in the April snow and hail storms!

The Mid Valley Chapter’s Heart of the Valley Dressage Shows I & II are just around the corner (May 10-11th, 2008) at DevonWood, and we desperately need your help. We have once again offered three competition arenas in an effort the accept as many entries as possible and help everyone get their scores, and this year we have broken the weekend into two separate shows in the hopes our exhibitors can earn two qualifying scores over the weekend.

Thank you so very much for all of your help in the past. As you know, it is your volunteer support that makes our show a success. Three arenas require a great number of people to keep things running, so if you can, please put our show on the calendar again this year.

PLEASE VOLUNTEER! If you are interested and available - please send your preferences to our Volunteer Coordinator Tammy Kienitz at tammykienitz@centerytel.net

United States Dressage Federation Welcomes New All-Breeds Participating Registries/Organizations

April 22nd, 2008

The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) welcomes all of it’s new and returning all-breeds participating registries/organizations (POs). The newly added POs for the 2008 competition season include: the Palomino Horse Breeders of America, the Fell Pony Society of North America, the United States P.R.E. Association, the Canadian Horse Breeders Association, the Friesian Sporthorse Association, the Friesian Heritage Horse & Sport Horse International, and the Nokota Horse Conservancy.

All POs, by partnering with USDF, recognize the accomplishments of their breed or registry on a national level through the Adequan/USDF All-Breeds year-end awards program. Currently, USDF has 62 POs and over 15,015 horses declared to participate in the program.

“Through combined efforts with all of our participating organizations in the all-breeds awards program, we are able to promote dressage within the various breed organizations, as well as to highlight the contributions of different breeds within the world of dressage. Also, with the support of all of our POs, this program has come to embody the mission of USDF by serving as a catalyst for education, recognition of achievement and promotion of dressage,” stated Krystina Firth, Senior Competitions Coordinator.

For more information on Adequan/USDF All-Breeds awards or to view a full listing of current USDF POs, visit the USDF website at www.usdf.org, e-mail allbreeds@usdf.org, or call (859) 971-2277.

The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is pleased to announce lower credit accumulations to earn a USDF University Program Diploma. New criteria for the program were approved at the 2007 Adequan/USDF Annual Convention in Orlando, FL, and take effect April 1, 2008.

Certificates for the USDF University Program will now be awarded at the following levels; USDF Certificate (15 credits), USDF Diploma (30 credits), USDF Bronze Diploma (45 credits - reduced from 60), USDF Silver Diploma (60 credits - reduced from 120), USDF Gold Diploma (75 credits - reduced from 180), and the two newly created levels of USDF Platinum Diploma (90 credits) and USDF Diamond Diploma (105 credits).

Under the new program requirements, all pre-registered attendees/auditors at any USDF approved program will receive USDF University Credits. In addition, participants in USDF Adult Clinics, Junior/Young Rider Clinics, Instructor Certification Workshops, “L” Program, and Sport Horse Seminars will now receive four credits for participating as opposed to the previous two.

Attendees at all off-campus university programs will still be required to pay a five dollar processing fee as in the past with credits being awarded as follows: one-half credit for a half-day program, one credit for a one-day program, and one credit for each additional day of a program.

Kathie Robertson, USDF Senior Programs and Education Coordinator, stated, “USDF is very pleased to be able to provide additional opportunities for our members to receive their diplomas and hope these changes within the program motivate them to continue their education and expand their knowledge.

Collecting Gaits Farm/USEF Dressage Festival of Champions to host USEF Selection Trials for Dressage

April 7th, 2008

Lexington, KY - Continuing the successful partnership that delivered a host of dressage championships last year for the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF), Collecting Gaits Farm renew their commitment to dressage as the title sponsor of the 2008 Collecting Gaits Farm/USEF Dressage Festival of Champions. To be held in San Juan Capistrano, CA on two separate weekends, June 20-22 and June 27-29, this year the Dressage Festival of Champions will also serve as the USEF Selection Trials for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team in Dressage.

“Collecting Gaits Farm’s dedication to the sport of dressage over the past years has helped to grow the sport overall,” said John Long, USEF’s Chief Executive Officer. “In addition, their commitment to specific competitions, like the Festival of Champions, has helped to raise the level of competition by helping to significantly to grow the event with both horses and riders.”

For the last several years, Collecting Gaits Farm has supported the prominent Dressage Festival of Champions. This year, the Festival of Champions is even more important as the road to the 2008 Olympic Games for the U.S. dressage horses runs through the Festival. As it does every year, the Festival of Champions will showcase the nation’s 12 best horse/rider combinations competing for National Championship titles in the Junior, Young Rider, Young Adult “Brentina Cup”, Intermediaire I, and Grand Prix divisions. It is the Grand Prix Championship which will also serve as the official USEF Selection Trials for Dressage.

“Once again, my husband and I are very honored to participate as title sponsor of the USEF/Collecting Gaits Farm Dressage Festival of Champions,” said Shereen Fuqua, co-owner of Collecting Gaits Farm. “Each year, the riders and horse combinations become more elite as our sport continues to gain more experience, both in quality of the horses and the quality of training, in preparation for our National Dressage Championships. This year is a very special year for two main reasons— 2008 is the year of the Olympic Games and there is a fantastic turn out of twelve Grand Prix combinations competing in the USEF Selection Trials for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team in Dressage. The second reason that it makes for a very special year is that for the first time in four years, the competition will be held in San Juan Capistrano, California, which will offer new opportunities since it is being held on the West Coast.”

Located in Alpharetta, GA, a suburb of Atlanta, GA, Collecting Gaits Farm is owned by Jeff and Shereen Fuqua. The Fuqua’s enjoy giving back to the sport in order to encourage the growth of dressage in the United States. Collecting Gaits Farm also supports the Markel/USEF Young Horse Dressage National Championships, which will take place at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY September 12-14.

Qualifying for all five Collecting Gaits Farm/USEF Dressage Festival of Champions divisions is underway. Complete selection procedures, ranking lists, applications, media credentials, and competition information is now available on a new link within the USEF website: http://www.usef.org/contentPage2.aspx?id=dressagefestival.

For tickets and venue information please visit: www.dressageontheroadtohongkong.com.

For more information about any of these championships or programs please contact Jennifer Keeler, USEF National Director of Dressage, at jkeeler@usef.org or (859) 225-2024.

Lendon Gray Appointed as President and CEO of The Dressage Foundation

April 3rd, 2008

The Dressage Foundation proudly announced following a special meeting of its Board of Directors, that Lendon Gray will become the President and Chief Executive Officer of The Dressage Foundation, effective September 1, 2008.

“Her appointment grows out of a Management Transition Plan that has been conducted over the past year by the Foundation’s Board and Staff, to replace John Boomer, President and CEO, and his wife, Lynn, Administrative Director, who, as sole staff members, have led, administered and managed The Dressage Foundation for the past ten years,” said Major General Jonathan Burton, Chairman of The Foundation Board. “And, the Boomers have done an outstanding job, in the opinion of the Board and the dressage community,” Burton added.

John Boomer stated, “We are so excited about Lendon taking the leadership reins of The Dressage Foundation, as she has just piled one high accomplishment on top of another for so many years now, and has deservedly reached an exalted pinnacle in our beloved sport.” Boomer and the Foundation Board have assigned Lendon Gray the principal function of leading The Dressage Foundation to a higher plateau, financially and programmatically, thereby enabling it to make an ever-larger footprint on the sport of Dressage.

“I am a bit intimidated to try to step into the shoes of Lowell and John Boomer,” Gray said. “For the past 19 years through their efforts and contacts with many of dressage’s greatest supporters, The Dressage Foundation has made it possible for so many people of all ages and levels of riding to be inspired, to improve their riding, to elevate their teaching, and to gain appreciation for the challenges and value of dressage. I am however exhilarated by the opportunity to expand on the base that The Dressage Foundation has provided for the advancement of amateurs, youth, and instructors as well as elite riders. Some of my first goals are to create opportunities to educate our instructors in teaching skills and to bring dressage opportunities to riders from other disciplines and ‘alternate’ breeds.”

Lendon Gray’s equestrian credentials are outstanding and extensive.

  • As a rider, she has won awards consistently since she was a young rider, rode on the 1980 and 1988 Olympic Teams, and won eight medals at U.S. Olympic Festivals in 1981, 1982, 1991, 1992, on four different horses, each trained by her.
  • As a trainer/instructor/coach she has taught clinics all over the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland and Uruguay. Her list of students includes many of today’s best-known dressage riders. She currently operates Gleneden Dressage, a training stable in Bedford, New York, with more than 50 horses and 100 regular students. She has been involved in governance of the sport and continues to be active, through USDF, USEF, USET, US Pony Club, Equestrian Educational Systems, Sweet Briar College, The Dressage Foundation, and Dressage4Kids, Inc., for which she is Founder and President.
  • Gray is a frequent speaker, active writer for equestrian media, and has authored the book “Lessons with Lendon.”  She has won many awards and as an Olympic athlete was recently added to the list of Congressional Gold Medal Award winners.  It is the US House of Representatives’ highest civilian award.

Boomer said Lendon Gray has accepted the position for an open-ended term, without salary or benefits compensation, but with reimbursement for travel and business expenses. Gray will remain at her Bedford, New York base, supervising and working with the Foundation’s two-person administrative staff, located in Lincoln, Nebraska and with its off-payroll cadre of financial, legal, accounting, graphic design, printing, web master and public relations advisors. Over the balance of the year, John and Lynn Boomer will be hiring and training their replacements, and will remain with the Foundation until new staff members are seated firmly in their saddles. John Boomer will remain as a member of The Dressage Foundation’s Board of Directors.

“The highlight in this news of Lendon’s appointment is the blending of historic roles of two prominent American dressage pioneer families — the Grays and the Boomers,” said John Boomer.  “Lendon’s mother was a nationally distinguished horsewoman in her own right and taught horseback riding lessons over national radio from her home in Maine,” said Boomer. “And listening in Nebraska was an aspiring young horseman named Lowell Boomer, my father,” John added. Lowell Boomer, today 96 years of age, became the founding organizer of the United States Dressage Federation in 1973, then served for twelve years as its Executive Director, followed by four more years as President, and in 1989 established The Dressage Foundation. Like Gray, Lowell Boomer has been honored with many awards, including the United States Equestrian Federation’s Lifetime Achievement Award. The Chronicle of the Horse named Lowell Boomer “One of the Fifty Most Influential Horsemen of the Twentieth Century.”

“My wife Lynn and I are moved by the high accomplishments of these two premier Dressage families, and now this long heritage, strengthened in union, can hopefully make an impact on the sport of Dressage that will be large and lasting,” said John Boomer.

For more information, please contact John Boomer at (402) 434-8585.

The Dressage Foundation is a national non-profit, tax-exempt, donor-driven organization that is dedicated to supporting and advancing the sport of dressage. The organization solicits contributions, appropriately allocates the donations and awards grants and scholarships to dressage riders of all ages and levels.  For more information, please visit www.dressagefoundation.org.
