ODS Breeders Showcase Closing Date Extended / Need for Sponsors, Volunteers

July 30th, 2008

ODS Breeders Showcase I & II

2 years ago, ODS started a one weekend, 2 qualifying shows, USDF recognized Dressage Sporthorse Breeding Show at Devonwood Equestrian Centre. This show
has been a great success for a couple of reasons: it was the first show in the region to offer two qualifying shows over one weekend and this was the first time an in-hand and Materiale show was held at Devonwood. Now, the show is back again – but with lighter than usual entries and sponsors….. so we are asking for your help so the show can go on!

Extension of Entry Closing Date to August 1st, 2008. Hurry – there’s still time to sign up!

We are extending our entry closing date on our two Breeders Showcase Shows held at Devonwood Equestrian Centre on August 9th and 10th. Again, each day is it’s own recognized show – so for those exhibitors who work toward national USDF ranking, this one weekend offers two qualifying shows.

We will not assess any additional fees (late fees) for entries that are postmarked by August 1st. This will hopefully entice you all to bring the young horses that you’ve bred or purchased or bring your mare or stallion to show them in hand (handlers will be available if needed).

The first year of this show was an overwhelming success and we are hoping to have similar success by extending the closing date on the entries. Please – come one come all!

Entry forms can be found on this page:  http://www.oregondressage.com/entryforms.html
Sponsorship – Call for Help!

This show is an important show to many local and regional breeders/owners of young horses/mares/stallions as it provides the all important “third” show that exhibitors need to qualify their horses for USDF national rankings. The horses shown in-hand are truly our next generation of our dressage riding horses…..
and for the show to go on, we need your help.

We like to know if you can sponsor a class at $25.00 per class, or two classes which gets your business card in our beautiful program. There’s even higher
sponsorship levels still available which allow for increased marketing for your farm/business/service. So please e-mail Dan Ruediger by 8/1/08 if you’d like to participate. ODS needs your help.

Thanks in advance and we look forward to seeing you at Devonwood EC on August 9th and 10th for the ODS Breeders Showcase I and II!

Volunteers are also needed!

Please contact Rose Newman (rose_newman@yahoo.com) if you are available on either of these days.  We are looking for gate keepers, scorers and general helpers.  Thank you in advance.

Swedish Warmblood Inspection

July 23rd, 2008

The Pacific Northwest inspection will be held September 28, 2008 at Donida Farm, Auburn, Wa. The inspection will have two international judges, Christina Olsson and Lasse Berglund from Sweden and is fun and educational! Everyone is welcome; the Swedish judges are very good about explaining what they are looking at; always with an eye to finding the best points of a horse.

The inspection usually starts at 8 am; please check the SWANA (Swedish Warmblood Association of North America) website or Donida Farm website for details.

Mares and foals will be inspected; also there will be riding horse tests and possibly stallion inspections. This year the Appendix Swedish horses may be branded with the Swedish brand. SWANA especially hopes for 3 and 4 year-old Swedish horses to participate in the Riding Horse tests; the tests include conformation, free-jumping, and light work under saddle. For more information please see http://www.swanaoffice.org or http://www.donidafarm.com/

AQHA Regional Experience: Dressage Help Needed!

July 15th, 2008

Looking for one dressage rider with a registered quarter horse who can ride in an evening performance at the AQHA Regional Experience in Nampa, Idaho.

The performance will take place Friday, July 25, at 9pm. We need someone who can ride a test or a musical freestyle as part of the Friday night entertainment. Lynn Palm will be there to talk about dressage and we need someone to ride to raise awareness and interest in dressage among quarter horse owners.

AQHA Region Experience shows are to show the versatility of the breed and to get people interested in showing their quarter horses and this is a good opportunity to get quarter horse owners interested in dressage.

ALSO NEEDED: Volunteers to sit in the USDF/Region 6 booth at the AQHA show. People to hand out information, talk about dressage and what it can do for horses and riders in other disciplines and the fun and enjoyment of practicing dressage.

July President Column

July 1st, 2008

I’ve been so engrossed with my chapter’s (Central Oregon) activities for the past few weeks I nearly missed the deadline for the July issue of Flying Changes. As I write we are in the final hours of preparation for our first 2 day, 2 ring show in many years. The venue is brand new and this is the first big show to be held there. Most of our show committee is new to the show management side of competition. I know it has been a real eye opener for me to paraticipate in this aspect of dressage. The work these people put on to bring these wonderful shows to us as competitors in amazing. The cost to us as competitors is quite reasonable compared to the hours and dedication put in by the show committees. A very small group of people keep the shows going and bring in most of the income for our chapters and for ODS.

Our own Championship show has earned a lot of money for ODS in the past few years. This is due mostly to dedicated volunteers putting in hours and soliciting sponsors, keeping costs down to competitors and making the money that has helped us keep our dues at the same level for several years. The best way to keep showing costs and membership costs down is to volunteer your time at the shows or in the planning and organizing of the shows, soliciting sponsors or providing donations of goods and services needed for the shows. In the face of fuel cost inflation I can’t think of any other way to keep the shows going, especially outside of the Portland Metro area.

We recently formed a committee to oversee our successful League Show program and Championship. Central Oregon Chapter had a League show in May and I volunteered to officiate as what we are calling the “show coordinator”. This is a position sort of like a “TD” but of course with no certification from any organization. Basically the job is to make sure the volunteers all know what their duties are, help the secretary make the show run smoothly, serve as a resource person for any problems or conflicts which may arise during the day and make sure the rules we have are followed and that the safety of spectators, riders and horses is ensured as well as possible. Seemingly small issues like keeping the gate area clear of foot traffic and socializers and making sure there is no one on foot in the warm up ring help to make our shows more safe for everyone. It is not easy to confront people who do not know or choose to not follow the rules. Happily, about 90% of people are understanding and cooperative. The other 10% make volunteers and officials not want to take on these jobs. Happily there were only a few small incidents on this occaision that caused any sort of confrontation. I mention this because we wish for our League Show Program to uphold a consistent standard and quality and I would encourage chapters and others sponsoring league shows to look at having an official on duty during the show. COC is able to make the League Show Secretary and the Show Coordinator both paid positions recently due to the success of the three show series.

August 23 and 24th is the USDF Region VI Adult Clinic at Devonwood. By the time this article is printed the rider application deadline will be passed, but, it will not be too late to plan to attend the clinic as an auditor. It happens to be the same weekend as the Junior-Young Rider Team Championships at Devonwood as well. This busy weekend should be a great chance to audit a clinic with Jane Savoie and watch some of our Junior/Young Riders in action as well. Contact our Region VI Education Coordinator Francy Haupt for information about auditing the clinic. For information about the Junior Young Rider show contact Gaye McCabe.

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our wonderful board and committees and our office administrator ODS has run smoothly this past month since our last board meeting. The board will meet next in Newberg, August 9. If you have concerns or suggestions please contact your regional director, directors at large or any executive board member.

Have a great summer!
Marsha
