This year, we are encouraging members to renew their memberships online prior to 9/30/08 in an effort to reduce printing and postage costs.   You can renew your ODS membership on the USDF’s secure website (https://www.usdf.org/gmo/ods.asp). Along with renewing your ODS membership online, you can also to upgrade your USDF membership to a USDF Participating Member at the same time, if you choose.

If you would rather pay by check, renewal forms will be mailed the first week of October, or you can print a 2009 ODS Membership form (PDF) and mail it into the office (forms are located on the ODS Website at: http://oregondressage.com/2009_ODS_MembershipForm.pdf).

Dear Members,

The ODS board is accepting nominations for the two of our ODS director-at-large positions. Ballots to elect the new Directors will be sent in early October and the winners will be announced at the November board meeting.

In accordance with ODS by laws and the procedure manual, the board has already solicited nominees from individuals who are currently supporting ODS activities.  This email is an effort to be inclusive and encourage participation from other members who may have an interest in serving the organization.

Here are some brief facts regarding the position:

As well as being an advocate for the membership, you are expected to attend the quarterly board meetings and contribute to the effort of the board activities: shows, educational programs, publications, policy and procedure development, etc. The term is for three years.  There are incidental costs associated with being a board member.  Directors pay their own mileage and retreat costs unless a chapter has volunteered to sponsor them.  Meetings are in Portland, Springfield and other locations, sometimes in conjunction with other ODS activities.

Here is the exact job description as written in the most current ODS Handbook:

Director At Large:

• Serves a 3 year term
• Sensitive to the thoughts and wishes of the Society membership and represents the interest of all ODS members at Board Meetings.
• Attends ODS Board Meetings and votes on issues presented
• Discusses issues with ODS members and reports back to the Board or the appropriate committee.
• Shall serve as a state officer or board committee member
• Submits additions to the agenda to the ODS Office at least three weeks before the meeting.
• Obtains a working knowledge of the basics of parliamentary procedure so that board meetings are conducted efficiently.

If you desire to run for the position, the office will need a brief bio to include on the ballot.  Please respond to Corinne, at the office, with a bio of roughly 250 words that will help the ODS members get a sense of who you are.  Here are some main points, with examples, that you might include in your submission:

• Who you are: (where you live, what chapter you might belong to, how long you’ve been involved with ODS)
• What you do: (compete? manage shows? chapter officer? breeder? judge? instructor?)
• Do you have special interests within ODS? (Examples might be: youth dressage, league shows, chapter activities, fundraising etc.)
• Be sure to mention any special skills or experience from outside the horse world that would be of value to ODS.
• Please submit the bio to Corinne at the office with a brief message of your intent to stand as a candidate for the director-at-large position by 8:00 AM September 25th. Email submissions are encouraged.

In October in Eugene (11 & 12th) and the Portland area and November 14-16 near Spokane, WA I’m teaching clinics. In September I’m teaching 4-week “Unity in Balance” improve-your-seat classes in Sisters.  Classes and clinics will help you get rid of habitual (and often unrecognized)  tension, improve balance, move in-synch with your horse, and be more aware of  how you move so you can better give aids, support your horse’s movement and move in synch with your horse partner.

Classes and clinics consist of on the ground movement education and strengthening lessons, group riding lessons, and individual lunge lessons. You will have the opportunity to explore inefficient habits, imbalances, asymmetry, and tension in your riding, and more importantly you will have the help to become the balanced, supple, efficiently moving, clearly communicating, beautiful rider you are.

After taking my classes, riders, both experienced and novice, have been delighted with the improvements in their riding, in awareness of self and of their understanding of how their balance, tension, and habitual ways of sitting and moving influence their horse–and how awareness and improved fluidity and balance of their movement can help their horse. Rider’s have experienced quieter hands, fluid sitting trot, evenly draped legs, confident awareness of the weight and position of each seatbone. They’ve experienced horses that are more symmetrical and balanced, easily doing lateral movements, canter departs, etc. Instructors have been grateful for how student’s self awareness helps in understanding the instructor. After a few lessons riders have been astounded at the differences in their ease of riding and giving aids and the balance and understanding and improved movement of their horse.

Classes are limited to 5 people and offered in Central Oregon.
Session 1: Mondays September 8-29th, 1pm – 5 pm.
Session 2: Tuesdays September 9-30th, 10 am – 2 pm.
Session 3: Tuesdays, October 7-28th.
Each session costs $240 for the 4 classes.

This month I have had to add a second session so I now have room for 2 more riders. Because of the late notice I am giving a make up session on Friday September 12th to teach the materials of the first class.

Dear ODS Members,

I feel like time has just flown by this summer and maybe I am not the only one who feels that way!! Our annual ODS Awards Banquet less than a week away and not many of you have signed up to attend this year.

We set aside this date each year for our members to acknowledge and celebrate some of the hard working and dedicated people within ODS.

Our host hotel has been gracious enough to again extend our deadline to give them a headcount late Wednesday (tomorrow) evening.  That means that there are a few more hours for you to make banquet reservations!  You can make reservations over the internet from the banquet page (www.oregondressage.com/banquet.html) or by e-mailing me (see my e-mail address below – please don’t hit “reply” as the message will be delivered to the ODS Office not to me).  We still have table goodies and wine available for a few more VIP tables if you are interested, on a first come-first served basis.

LaNora Long is organizing a terrific Silent Auction that will be held during the banquet – we are still accepting contributions to the Auction as well.  Donations can be dropped off at the ODS/Awards Tent during the Championship Show on Friday and on Saturday through noon or brought directly to the banquet.  It is helpful if LaNora knows about the donations prior to your dropoff so that she can get the paperwork ready – please drop her an e-mail at barnbum4eva@yahoo.com.

Hello ODS!We need your help! Our ODS Open & Championships Shows are just over a week away (Sept 12-14, DevonWood Eq. Centre), and we have many volunteer vacancies yet to fill. Your support has been amazing in years past, and has made this show what it is. With more than 150 horses entered this year, and FOUR ARENAS for much of the show, we need your extra hands more than ever!

Starting Thursday afternoon for competitor arrival, we have vacancies in all positions, including scribe, e-scribe, gate, warm-up, runner (must have OR Drivers License), parking and more.
