This coming Friday the 27th of February we are going to try to get the ODS Awards out in the mail. In order to do so, I need to get a small group of volunteers together to assist me. If you are available in the morning or early afternoon and can come to the ODS Office to help stuff and organize envelopes, please respond to me directly. Ideally we would begin the project around 9 AM and hopefully be done by noon. The office is in my home in NE Hillsboro.
Thank you in advance.
Warmest Regards,
Corinne Stonier

Attention Trainers and Instructors:
Do you have High School riders that might be interested in earning a High School Activity letter in Dressage? We have everything you need to form a team and compete. If you do and would like to learn more about the program please contact Gaye McCabe at J-G.McCabe@Juno.com or call her any evening at 503-378-0309.
ODS has given us approval to go ahead and create a College Program since we’ve had so many High School graduates wanting to continue to compete in the team atmosphere.
This is the current propose design:
College students can compete at ODS recognized or ODS League Shows.
We would designate shows as College competitions (similar to how we designate high school shows).
I would recommend that the OSU Beavers’ show to be the kick off show in the fall and then again in the spring.
We can finish the year by including a College Team Championship portion to the ODS League Championship/High School Team Championship Show (currently held in May).
In the future, if this show gets too big we may break off the High School Championships and College Championships to another weekend.
Students can represent their schools as individuals. If there are enough students from one college/university they could represent that specific school as a team. Otherwise, we will put riders together from different colleges/universities to form mixed teams. It will be up to the student/riders to approach their own colleges to get their clubs setup and to obtain approval to be recognized as representing their college at ODS League and USDF level shows. If the school is not open to this, students could still compete and represent their school, they just would not get the school’s recognition.
If you have any questions or other ideas please feel free to contact me.

The ODS Board and several other ODS members just returned from what I feel was the best retreat ever! Great thanks go to Ed Miller and Donna Thayer for preparing and putting on a very productive presentation and work session to develop a Strategic Plan for ODS. We were first charged with going over the past 5 years and celebrating our accomplishments as well as looking at those areas we could say were “learning experiences.” We then as small groups moved into the future and wrote “letters” telling a friend who had been away for the past five years what ODS was like in 2013. The letters were surprisingly similar for all of the 5 or 6 groups. The information will be collated and from this material we will draw the 4 or 5 issues our Strategic Plan will focus on. In addition we reviewed the results of the Survey sent out last fall. Thanks to the 25% of membership who completed the survey and gave comments. This information will be very helpful in developing this plan. The Strategic Plan committee includes Ed Miller, Donna Thayer, Patty Armstrong, Gaye McCabe, Linda Lindus and myself. Our timeline is to identify goals at a meeting in March. In August well will set the actual goals and draft the Strategic Plan to present at the annual meeting in November. The final plan will be presented at the 2010 retreat in January and implementation will begin.
In response to many comments in the survey about lack of communication and chapter support we have started an email chat group for Chapter Presidents. This venue will allow presidents to communicate with each other and the board, share ideas and challenges and ask questions.
We reviewed two proposals from USEF and two from USDF and decided our stand on these issues. We have agreed to stand with California Dressage Society against GR1210.14. While we agreed the USDF Board of Governors and system of Governance could be streamlined we have sent a recommendation against the proposal to the Governance Committee. We also reviewed and have given feedback in regards to a proposal about rating shows.
We have promoted our current Office Manager, Corinne Stonier, to Executive Director. We are actually writing a new job description for this position. We feel Corinne’s valuable skills and passion for our organization justify promotion and she will be a valuable participant in the Strategic Plan as well.
Good news is our membership numbers are right on target even with the uncertain economic times we are experiencing. We have purchased 8 great new DVD’s for the library and our Education Chair, Francy Haupt and Librarian, Claudette Fitzgerald are restructuring the library offering list to make it more user friendly for you. Our shows are beginning to open and we hope they will be filling. We look forward to the successes and challenges of 2010.
As a board we are striving to serve the membership, as always please feel free to contact me or any of the board members with questions and concerns.
