FVC offering Clinic Rides on Sunday 5/30

May 25th, 2010

It appears that our Sporthorse classes at the FVC Dressage show are going to be very light on Sunday May 30.

Our judge Sue Madden Mandas has agreed to do a few clinic rides for us after she is done judging.  These rides will at Clark County Fairgrounds once the show is over and each 45 minute lesson will be $100.

She use to come and clinic at Summerfield Farm years ago but hasn’t been out to this area for awhile.  For those of you unfamiliar with her here’s a bit about her.

Sue Madden Mandas has been involved in the sport of Dressage as a competitor, trainer, judge, and instructor for over 40 years.  She is a USDF Bronze, Silver and Gold Medalist and has been longlisted for the USET several times.  Sue has trained many horses to the FEI level, winning Regional Champion or Reserve Champion at every level, Second through Grand Prix.  Sue lives in Dayton, Ohio, where she teaches a great group of adult amateurs and is competing at Prix St. George and Intermediare 1.

I know this is last minute but please let me know by May 27 if you’d like a lesson.

Thanks

North Willamette Valley Chapter – ODS Report

May 15th, 2010

North Willamette Valley has a lot to report.

With the renewed interest in rider safety our Chapter has scheduled a rider safety meeting on May 20 at 6 pm in Canby, OR.  Our speaker will be Todd Gary who is part of the Canby Fire Department and works closely with the Mollala High School Equestrian Team.  This meeting in open to non-members as well in hopes we can help get the word out about the importance of rider safety.  You can RSVP with Marla at marlasa2002@yahoo.com .

The chapter summer show is coming up quick, Summer Daze in Boring, OR.  This year’s theme is Christmas in July featuring a special “test of choice” division designed especially for anyone willing to dress themselves and their horses up in Christmas attire.  There is even a place to get additional points based on your festive presentation.  We are looking forward to this year’s event.

Also, the chapter has arranged for a horse camping and trail ride event July 23-26 at Silver Falls in Silverton, OR.  Members and friends are invited.  They can choose to camp any of the nights or just join up for a trail ride and lunch following.  We have secured the group camp site so there will be plenty of room.  The more the merrier.

August leads us into the Adult Camp currently scheduled to be held at Make you Mark Stables the weekend of August 27 – 29.  More information to come.

The Dressage Foundation is seeking contributions to the Sally Swift Memorial Fund

May 13th, 2010

Sally could relate to anyone, and despite her fame, breadth of knowledge and accomplishments, greeted all who journeyed down her path with warmth and humility. She never elevated herself above others, but opened her heart with acceptance and friendship. All who came to know Sally personally or through her work feel as though they have lost a dear friend. Please join us in honoring Sally Swift with a gift to the Sally Swift Memorial Fund at The Dressage Foundation!

This fund will provide grants up to $1,000 to promote Centered Riding.

USDF GMOs wishing to host a Centered Riding clinic are eligible to apply for the grant each year, a minimum of one annual grant will be awarded beginning in 2010. Considering Sally’s history and support of Centered Riding, this is a lasting tribute to a wonderful lady!

Could you consider honoring Sally by making a contribution to this Fund?

Opportunity classes will not count toward championship qualifications or year-end awards for any of these organizations.

The Cascade Dressage Shows are offering four Opportunity classes each day – two at Training Level and two at First Level. All entries received for Opportunity classes at will be wait listed.  If ride times are available when entries close on May  26, then the Opportunity classes will be offered, with entries processed in postmark order, until all ride times are filled.

Materiale classes:

We are offering Materiale classes on both Saturday and Sunday in the following categories: Three-year-old Fillies, Three-year old Colts and Geldings, Four & Five-year old Mares, and Four

& Five-year old Stallions and Geldings. Classes for fillies and mares may not be combined with classes for colts, geldings or stallions. Three-year-olds must be at least 36 months of age as of the competition date. Materiale is a group class; all entries are in the ring at once. Horses will be evaluated according to the criteria listed on the “USDF Materiale Class Scoresheet” (below).

  • Directives: Movement should demonstrate purity & quality (clear rhythm, regularity & relaxation) (judged mainly in profile), correctness (judged mainly coming to & going from judge). Movement at trot and canter should be light & springy. Should have scope & volume, maintaining uphill balance. Must show rideability, potential to become competitive dressage horse & potential to progress through the levels. Horse must be riding horse type.
  • Walk (30%): Four even beats, straight, active & even strides, correctly aligned steps, articulation of joints, freedom of shoulders & haunches, balance, elastic & swinging back, overstep, reach, ground-covering with marching quality.
  • Trot (30%): Two even beats, straight, active & even strides, correctly aligned steps, articulation of joints, freedom of shoulders & haunches, balance, elasticity, swinging back, natural engagement & impulsion from hindquarters, suspension, power from upward thrust & roundness.
  • Canter (30%): Three even beats, straight, active & even strides, correctly aligned steps, articulation of joints, freedom of shoulders & haunches, balance, elasticity, swinging back, natural engagement & impulsion from hindquarters, suspension, power from upward thrust, roundness & “uphill” strides.
  • General Impression (10%): Includes harmony (relationship of conformation to movement), athleticism (strength & mobility), development related to age & condition. Demonstrates character, presence & temperament necessary for training.

Young Horse classes:

The FEI has written special tests to evaluate the potential of young horses to become international-calibre dressage mounts.  5- and 6-year-olds each have their own test. The USEF has written a test for 4-year-olds, for which the overall directive is: “To find horses with elastic natural gaits, trained in a correct way according to the age, which can reach higher dressage levels.” These tests are intended to demonstrate quality and potential, rather than mastery of movements and precise geometry.

In Young Horse tests, two S judges sit together at C and collaborate on their evaluations. It is preferred that the judges give their comments and scores to the rider via loudspeaker, so that the audience can hear them, too. To download the FEI tests, click here: http://www.horsesport.org/disciplines/dressage/technical-info. USEF members may download the 4-Year-Old test here: https://www.usef.org/documents/disciplines/dressage/tests/4YEAROLDTEST.pdf
