Manna Pro Issues Feed Recall in OR, CA and NV

January 31st, 2011

January 31, 2011 –

Horse feed manufacturer Manna Pro Products, LLC, has voluntarily recalled one of its horse feed products distributed in California, Nevada, and Oregon because it might contain potentially harmful levels of monensin sodium (trade name Rumensin). According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, monensin sodium is a medication approved for use in some livestock and poultry species, but can be fatal to horses if fed at sufficiently high levels. The medication is used to increase feed productivity in beef and dairy cattle, said Manna Pro Products spokesman Rob McCoy, PhD.

McCoy said that on Jan. 28 the company voluntarily recalled a single lot of Family Farm Complete Horse 10 horse feed packaged in 40 lb. bags. The product was distributed to retailers in California, Nevada, and Oregon between Jan. 11 and Jan. 21. No other Manna Pro or Family Farm products and no other lots of Complete Horse 10 are involved in the recall.

Owners can identify bags of the recalled product by the lot number 1006 appearing on the tag below the bar code and the code “MADE 010611 W” printed on the white strip sewn across the bottom of the bag. Retailers have removed the affected product from their shelves.

Horse owners who have purchased affected product should not feed it to their horses.

“They can simply dispose of the product and contact us for a full refund,” McCoy said.

Call Manna Pro Products at 866/700-7882 for more information.

USEF-Logo-721-226x300

Protective Headgear Rules for Dressage

Effective March 1, 2011, the following rules apply to USEF Dressage Competitions and Regular Competitions holding Dressage classes.  Note: ODS League Show rules are currently being updated by the ODS League Show Committee and an e-mail will be sent out when the updates have been reviewed.

  1. Riders under age 18 must wear protective headgear, as defined by DR120.5 and in compliance with GR801, at all times while mounted on the competition grounds. This includes non-competing riders as well as those competing at any level.
  2. While on horses competing in national level tests (Fourth Level and below), riders must wear protective headgear as defined by DR120.5 and in compliance with GR801, at all times while mounted on the competition grounds. This includes non-competing riders on horses competing in national level tests.
  3. While on horses competing in USEF or FEI Young Horse Tests, and FEI Junior Tests, riders must wear protective headgear as defined by DR120.5 and in compliance with GR801, at all times while mounted on the competition grounds.
  4. All riders competing in Para-Equestrian tests must wear protective headgear at all times while mounted on the competition grounds. Riders who compete in PE tests must wear protective headgear on every horse they ride, no matter the level or test.
  5. All riders of any age while on non-competing horses must wear protective headgear at all times while mounted on the competition grounds.
  6. All riders under age 18 and all riders while on horses competing in national level tests, who choose to wear Armed Services or police uniform, must wear protective headgear as defined in DR120.5 and in compliance with GR801 at all times while mounted on the competition grounds. Riders age 18 and over who wear Armed Services or police uniform on horses that are competing only in FEI levels and tests at the Prix St. Georges level and above must wear either protective headgear or the appropriate military/police cap or hat for their branch of service.
  7. When a horse is competing in both national and FEI levels or tests (e.g. Fourth Level and PSG), the rider must wear protective headgear at all times when mounted on that horse on the competition grounds and during all tests.
  8. While on horses that are competing only in FEI levels and tests at the Prix St. Georges level and above (including FEI Young Rider Tests, the USEF Developing Prix St. Georges Test and the USEF Brentina Cup Test), riders age 18 and over are not required to wear protective headgear in warm up or during competition. However, these riders may wear protective headgear without penalty from the judge.
  9. In FEI-recognized (CDI, CDI-Y, CDI-J, CDI-P, etc.) classes, FEI rules take precedence and protective headgear is permitted but not required.
  10. All riders while on horses competing in national level classes such as Equitation, Materiale and DSHB Under Saddle are required to wear protective headgear at all times when mounted on the competition grounds.

Protective headgear is defined as a riding helmet which meets or exceeds ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials)/SEI (Safety Equipment Institute) standards for equestrian use and carries the SEI tag. The headgear and harness must be secured and properly fitted. Any rider violating this rule at any time must immediately be prohibited from further riding until such headgear is properly in place.

Several members of the ODS Board are currently putting together a list of retailers across the state who will offer our members discounts on ASTM/SEI approved helmets – contact the ODS Office (office@oregondressage.com) if you would like to receive a copy of that list or if you are a retailer and would like to be included on the list.

WASART receives donation of 7′ model horse to be used for volunteer rescue training

January 27th, 2011

wasarthorse

Through the generosity of Mr. Darrel E. Nelson, the Instructional Lab Supervisor at the Washington State University, Dept. of Vet-erinary & Comparative Anatomy in Pullman, WA, Washington State Animal Response Team (WASART)  is now the proud owner of “Stan”, a seven foot, full-sized model of a quarter-horse. Stan will join “Titan”, our loaned black and white paint model horse, in helping train our members to rig a large animal for rescue.  “Stan” was so named by WSU vet students because, according to Darrel Nelson, all he did was “stand” around. Both Stan and Titan are very well behaved and require little upkeep.

WASART‟s General Meetings are currently held each quarter on the 2nd Wednesday of each quarter at 7:00 p.m. at the Key Bank, 1212 Cole Street, Enumclaw, WA 98022. In 2011, those meetings will be on March 9th, June 8th (and Graduation), September 14th, and December 14th (Graduation). The first hour of the meeting is for WASART business with the second hour for mini-training sessions. Everyone is welcome.

Demo Rider applications being accepted for the COC “Dressage Thru The Levels” Symposium

January 24th, 2011

Central Oregon Chapter of ODS is hosting “Dressage Thru The Levels”  with Janet Foy and Lendon Gray June 18-19, 2011.  We are in need of demo riders in order to be able to offer this wonderful opportunity to the riders in our area.  We need 2 riders per level (training thru PSG).  What we need is a video of the horse/rider combo performing the highest test for the level they are applying for (for example, if you want to ride in training level, you need to submit Training Test 4 (from last year) or Test 3 from 2011 to be considered).

We need videos by Feb 15.  Yes, you can send in tapes from last year if that is what you have.  Please visit our website www.centraloregondressage.com and click on the symposium info to download a demo rider application form.  Thanks and we look forward to seeing lots of videos coming in!

USDF Congratulates New “L” Program Graduates

January 20th, 2011

Lexington, KY – The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is pleased to announce that 31 USDF members successfully completed the USDF “L” Education Program between July and December, 2010.

The USDF “L” Education Program is designed to prepare candidates to enter the United States Equestrian Federation “r” Judges Training Program, to qualify individuals to judge schooling shows, and to give competitors, trainers, and instructors greater insight into the evaluative techniques of judging dressage. The program also serves to provide continuing education for licensed judges. The “L” Program is an excellent opportunity for all USDF members to learn from licensed judges in order to improve their scores and view other rides from a judge’s perspective, whether or not they plan on becoming licensed judges themselves. “L” Programs are conducted by a faculty of USDF-approved United States Equestrian Federation “S”-licensed dressage judges who have experience in teaching judge-training programs.
