Show Season in Full Swing

Although many shows at the end of May were postponed or cancelled, the season shifted into high gear in June. The ODS League Championship and HS Championship show was held at the Salem Fairgrounds June 4- 5. Jill Giri placed 4th in the Training Level Championship on Plain Jane. Marilyn Ulicny won her

T:3 class on Sunday in the open show, helped by a 9 on her free walk. Whitney Weston attended the NWEC at Aspen farms on a soggy Mother’s day weekend, and although the horses jumped well, elected not to run the full x-country course due to conditions. The ride a test and practice show was lots of fun,

with Geri Zickert taking the high point trophy. See the report below for all the details. Geri, Jill,

Marilyn, Cindy Sanders and Cassi Soule attended the rescheduled league show in Talent on 6/18. Everyone had a great time and the horses were all doing well. Cindy had a couple of young horses that were doing great for the first official trip off the farm and had solid tests at intro and training level. Marilyn earned a 2nd and a 5th on her spirited pony, Geri won her T:2 class on her score of 70%, which tied her for the AA high point. Unfortunately she placed second in the tiebreaker. Great Job Geri!!! Jill placed first in her 1:1 class on a score of 64.7% and 6th in 1:2 with 59% despite three 8’s in a competitive class. The win qualified PJ for the ODS League Championship at First level. Cassi Soule won the 1:2 and 1:3 on Debbie Beckland’s gelding Comet, earning a 9 on trot lengthenings and winning the Open high point.

CMC Update

June 29th, 2011

We had our monthly chapter meeting June 6 to discuss final plans for the Benefit Ride-a-Test Event to be held July 16 and 17.  I hope by now everyone has received a copy of the entry form, or gone to the ODS web site to retrieve a copy.

Why a Ride-a-Test???  While at the ODS Retreat in February, I heard that the Education Fund had not been gaining over the past few years.  I brought that message back to the CMC members and they were quick to step up and suggest ways that we could help raise money for the fund.  We decided on a 2 day Benefit Ride-a-Test with all proceeds going to the Linda Acheson Education Fund.

Linda not only held various officer positions in ODS and in the Chehalem Mountain Chapter, but was a great friend to many of us, and a huge advocate for educational opportunities.   The fund was created in Linda’s memory when we lost her in 2004, but it must have a balance of $50,000 before it can start giving back to ODS members.  The fund is currently around $35,000, so we’d like to help grow that to the $50,000 needed, so members of ODS can start benefitting from what Linda started for us.

Amanda James of Clover Valley Equestrian Center graciously donated her wonderful outdoor arena for our use.  Riders can ride a test of choice in a full court sand arena and have 30 minutes of instruction to improve their test.  So far, 10 top trainers and judges in the area have volunteered to work with riders to improve their tests.

We picked July 16 and 17 not only because it’s the weekend before Dressage at Devonwood, and will give riders the opportunity to practice their test in a full court sand arena, but we’re also hopeful that by then we’ll be in the middle of some beautiful summer weather.

We encourage all levels of riders to take advantage of this wonderful educational opportunity.  Even if you’ve never ridden a test and wondered what it might be like; this is the perfect time and place to give it a try.

Because of the full court arena, we encourage riders working on their Pas de Duex, Quadrilles and Musical Freestyles, to take advantage of the instruction and the full court arena.

Please visit the ODS web site for more information and entry forms.  This event is for all of us, so we need everyone’s support to make it a success….please plan to ride with us.   Hope to meet you there.  Sharon Knowlton

Tina Konyot’s Calecto V Recovering from Tick Infection

June 28th, 2011

By KENNETH J. BRADDICK

Calecto V, the 13-year-old Danish warmblood stallion ridden by Tina Konyot to the second ranked American combination, is recovering from a tick infection that forced withdrawal of the pair from the U.S. team for the CDIO Nations Cup at Aachen, Germany, next month.

The tick was thought to have attached itself to Calecto when Tina stopped at her farm in North Stonington, Connecticut, on their way from Florida to Canada where she is based for the summer with her boyfriend, Roger Atfield, a Thoroughbred race horse trainer an hour outside of Toronto.

The U.S. team for the Nations Cup was announced Monday and includes two of Tina’s World Equestrian Games team mates, Steffen Peters of San Diego, California, and Ravel, the top ranked U.S. combination, and Todd Flettrich of Wellington, Florida, and Otto The other two combinations are Günter Seidel of Cardiff, California, and U II and Jan Ebeling of Moorpark, California, and Rafalca.

Tina and Calecto last competed at the World Dressage Masters CDI5* in Florida in March where the pair finished second in the Grand Prix and third in the Freestyle. She passed up an opportunity to compete at the World Cup Final in Leipzig although she finished at the top of the North American League because the stallion would have had to return home for quarantine reasons before the European tour over the summer that included Fritzens, Austria and Aachen, that she had set as her goal for 2011. Her longer term goal is the Olympics in London next year, for which the U.S. has already qualified a team as a result of their fourth place finish at the WEG in Kentucky.

“After we arrived in Canada, he was not feeling 100 per cent she said,” Tina said. “We did some tests preparing for the European trip and found his white blood cell count was 4.9 and the normal range is a low of 5.5 to a high of about 12.”

She found a tick on Calecto’s tail bone, she said, and the veterinarian determined that was what “brought him down enough.” The tick was not the type that carries Lyme disease that can have long term debilitating effects and was named after the town of Lyme in Connecticut where several cases were discovered more than 35 years ago.

“It was not worth the risk to ship Calecto,” she said. The journey would have involved driving from Toronto to New York, the transatlantic flight and then the long road trip to Austria for the Fritzens show.

“All our plans were made, we had received some extra funding to cover the costs.”

Calecto has received three series of treatment to elevate his white cell count.

Tina said she plans to compete Calecto in a national Grand Prix at the Summer Festival CDI3* in Palgrave, Ontario, July 15-17–the same week as the Aachen Nations Cup–and then the CDI3* at Saugerties, New York, before going to Gladstone, New Jersey, to defend the Grand Prix National Championship she won at the Festival of Champions in 2010.

Judges for FEI Awards named

June 28th, 2011
The FEI has announced the three-strong judging panel for this year’s FEI Awards, which will be presided over by FEI President Princess Haya for the third consecutive year.

Diane Fissore-Wathelet, President of the Monaco Equestrian Federation, Zoë Kayes, Secretary General of the Malawi Equestrian Federation, and Juan Andres Sauce, International Delegate of the Venezuelan Equestrian Federation, will have the tough task of deciding which nominees will be applauded for their contribution to the sport at the FEI Awards Ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in November.

HRH Princess Haya will attend the ceremony, which will take place at the Copacabana Palace, the famous Art Deco hotel that opened its doors in 1923 and has played host to celebrities ranging from Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers to Madonna, Elton John, Luciano Pavarotti and the Rolling Stones.

Diane Fissore-Wathelet is a qualified lawyer and has presided over the Monaco Equestrian Federation since 1995. She has also been president of Jumping International de Monte-Carlo since its creation in 1995. Zoë Kayes grew up in Malawi, southern Central Africa and has ridden all her life. She is a qualified riding instructor, coach and dressage, jumping and eventing judge and has competed in national and international Jumping and Dressage events for many years. Kayes was instrumental in creating the Zomba-based Malawi Equestrian Federation, which has been affiliated to the FEI since 2002, and works to bring children with no access to riding gear or basic equipment into equestrian sports. She spent a year riding in New Zealand with ex-Olympic jumping rider Garnet Woods and still trains for dressage with Brian Burgess. Kayes attended Agricultural College in Winchester (GBR), where she studied agriculture, dairying and veterinary livestock.

“It’s the best present we could have wished for to celebrate our 125th anniversary,” said Jeanette Allen, chief executive of the trust.

“We hope to raise much-needed funds, which will be put towards the work we do with retired working horses, ponies and donkeys and equines that have been rescued, neglected or abandoned.”

The trust, established in 1886, runs the Home of Rest for Horses in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire, where it cares for over 90 horses, ponies and donkeys.

Its residents come from many different backgrounds, and include:

  • Thames Valley Police horse Titan, an 18.3hh Shire-cross and the largest police horse in the UK, is currently at The Horse Trust for respite because he suffers from intermittent lameness caused by ringbone.
  • Topsy, a 14.3hh skewbald mare, who retired to The Horse Trust this year after 19 years of service to a Riding for the Disabled Association in Oxfordshire.
  • Shetland pony Piglet, who was found abandoned, suffering from various problems including an infected eye, severe malnutrition, high worm burden and overgrown feet. Staff at The Horse Trust nurtured him back to health and he is now leading a happy life at the sanctuary.

The Horse Trust also funds equine research and runs training programmes to disseminate best practice in equine welfare.

The London International Horse Show at Olympia is one of the most important events in the equine calendar. It features top class show jumping, dressage and entertainment.

The Horse Trust will receive 50p from every ticket sold for the afternoon performance on Thursday, December 15. The afternoon will be an action-packed session with highlights including the Christmas Finale and the Horse Deals Christmas Pudding Speed Stake.

The trust will also run the Shopping Drop-Off Point throughout the Olympia Horse Show, where shoppers can ease the load and leave any items of shopping so that they can enjoy the performance in comfort. A donation will be made per item and all money will go to The Horse Trust.
