The next CMC meeting is February 7th at the Clover Valley Equestrian Center in Newberg.  We’ll be discussing final plans and preparations for the Bears Above Ground Show, and will be gathering ideas for activities, clinics, and ride-a-tests for the coming year.

March 5th and 6th is the Bears Above Ground Show at the Yamhill County Fairgrounds in McMinnville.  Please contact Janis Worrell at will.janis.worrall@gmail.com, or call Sharon at 503-780-9398, if you can volunteer some time at the show.  This is a 2 day show, so we appreciate any time you can spare to help.  We also need some people on Friday night, March 4th, to help set up the arena. If you live near the fairgrounds and have some time Friday evening, we’d really appreciate the help.

Please note…..We are not able to provide videos of every ride at the Bears Above Ground show, so the $10 office fee is no longer required with your entry; however, there will be a videographer available for you to hire at the show, if you would like to have your rides recorded. We hope to see you at the show. – Sharon Knowlton

2008-cmc-logoChehalem Mountain Chapter November News

We had a great turnout for our Nov 1 meeting and pizza party; a big thank you to all who attended.   We have a lot of energy taking us into 2011.  I’m looking forward to an exciting year ahead.

The weather was kind and provided a beautiful backdrop for the Julie Ronning dressage clinic in October.   We had two full days of great rides.   Everyone worked on improving their skills and went away with something to help them and their horse advance.   Julie will be in Newberg and available for lessons the week of Dec 27th.  Contact Suzi Ronning at 503-537-6530, to schedule a time.

The CMC Christmas Party is December 5th at Thornhill Farm starting at 4PM.  The chapter will provide the main dish, and beverages.  Bring a side dish or dessert to share, and a $20 gift, if you’d like to participate in the always fun and exciting gift exchange.

CMC members don’t forget to submit your best test scores for the 2010 show season for the High Point Awards.  Send your scores to Janet Kraft (kraft5801@comcast.net), Michelle Mohr McMillen (mmcmillen@macnet.com), and Heather McCafferty (jhmccafferty@comcast.net) by November 12.  In your email be sure to include which test you rode, the score and which show you attended.  The awards committee will compile the scores to determine the High Point winners at each level.

The Honkin Huge Ribbon Show was a huge success.  Thanks to all the competitors, volunteers and our judge, Kathy Casey for a great day.

Clover Valley Equestrian Center is sponsoring a tack sale on December 4th from 9am to 4pm.  Tables are $5.  The tables will be set up in an indoor arena, so you won’t have to worry about the weather.  The sale is being advertised with flyers and on Craig’s List, so if you have things you’d like to sell, contact Ashley Bertell at  aabertell@comcast.com,  or 503-936-6116 to reserve your spot.

Mark your calendar for the Bears Show March 5th and 6th.   This is a great show to get you and your horse out after a long winter, and a great way to jumpstart the new show year.  Entries open January 10.  Visit the ODS web site for more information.

Our next chapter meeting is Jan 3 at Clover Valley Equestrian Center on Tangen Road in Newberg.

Happy Holidays!!  Sharon Knowlton

October 7th, 2010

The October meeting at our new, Clover Valley Equestrian Center, location had a great turnout. We feel very lucky that Amanda James offered us this wonderful place to meet. Our new location will allow us to have a wider range of educational opportunities at our meetings and beyond.

We plan to welcome Dr. Eric Witherspoon to our November 1 meeting for a discussion about emergency medical care “while you wait for the vet to arrive”.

Our annual chapter Christmas party is scheduled for December 5 at Suzi Ronning’s Thornhill Farm.

It never hurts to plan ahead, so mark your calendars for the Bears Above Ground Show in McMinnville March 5 and 6, 2011.

As a reminder, there are still more opportunities to reconnect with the chapter before we ring in 2011….a couple meetings, a riding clinic, the Honkin Huge Ribbon Show, and our famous CMC Christmas Party.

We are returning to our regularly scheduled first Monday of the month meetings.  Our next meeting is October 4 at 7pm.  A reminder and information about the exact Newberg location will be sent to all CMC members in the next couple of weeks.  For anyone wishing to join the chapter, please contact Sharon Knowlton at wredrider@hotmail.com, or contact one of the other officers, so we can get you on our mailing list.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY….…

CMC is bringing Julie Ronning to the area for a riding clinic October 16 and 17.  The cost for a lesson with Julie is $45.

Julie began competing in Dressage and Combined Training as a child.  After college, she worked full time for two years as David Blake’s assistant.  David now works and trains with Steffen and Shannon Peters.  For the past year, Julie has had the great opportunity to ride for Sabine Schut-Kery at El Campeon in Thousand Oaks.  Along the way, she acquired a great deal of experience riding horses from age 3 to FEI, and has taught many riders on their own horses.  She is excited about the opportunity to get acquainted and work with riders in her home state.

Please contact Sharon Knowlton by October 8th at 503-780-9398, or email at wredrider@hotmail.com, to select which day is best for you. The clinic will be held at Suzi Ronning’s, Thornhill Farm, in Newberg.   Auditors are also welcome.

If you have a young or new-to-you horse, you can use this as an opportunity to get your horse out to a new place, and have Julie work with you on ground, or beginning riding techniques.

We hope to see many of you at some of our CMC events.

January 1st, 2010

Happy New Year!!!

We had a great turnout and a wonderful time at the CMC Christmas Party on December 5th.  Our hosts, Suzi and Jim Ronning, provided the perfect atmosphere for putting everyone in the holiday spirit.  We had scrumptious food, door prizes, annual awards, recognitions, and our spirited annual gift exchange.  It was a great way to end 2010 and get ready for 2011.

The CMC High Point winners for 2010 were Suzi Ronning with Luke Flynn and Felino, Sharon Knowlton with Wred, Robin Stern with Jacamo, and Laura Ritacco with Falcor.  The winners were awarded admission to the Intro to the 2011 Tests Clinic at Devonwood, January 15th, to help get them ready for the coming show season.  Good Samaritan Awards went to Suzi Ronning and Ashley Bertell for giving up their time to provide extra help and care to Wred while I recuperated from surgery for my broken arm.  CMC is a chapter filled with amazing members, I feel lucky to be part of such a great group.

Our next chapter meeting is scheduled for January 10th.  Please note this is not our normal first Monday of the month meeting time.  Cydria Schaefer DVM, CVA will be our speaker for the evening.  Cydria is a certified Yoga and Centered Riding instructor, and is currently studying the Feldenkrais Method of Awareness Through Movement.  Cydria will be explaining the biodynamics of the body and how our movement affects our horses, and how she helps riders work more harmoniously with their horses. Cydria offers individual and group lessons with exercises on and off the horse.  We’re hoping to schedule some sessions with Cydria during the coming year, so if you’re interested in this type of training, mark your calendar for January 10th and plan to join us for this introductory presentation.  CMC meets at Clover Valley Equestrian Center, 14275 NE Tangen Rd, Newberg, at 7pm.

A reminder that entries open January 10th for the Bears Above Ground Show.   The show is March 5th and 6th at the Yamhill County Fairgrounds in McMinnville.  This is a great show for kicking off the show season, and lots of fun, so plan to be there.  Please refer to the ODS web page for additional information and entry forms.

The February CMC meeting will return to the first Monday of the month on February 7th at Clover Valley Equestrian Center starting at 7pm.  We’ll be making final preparations for the Bears Show, discussing new business, and planning activities and clinics for 2011.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS….Everyone interested in helping out at the Bears Show March 5th and 6th, please contact Janis Worrall at will.janis.worrall@gmail.com, or call Sharon at 503-780-9398.  Bears Above Ground is a fun show for everyone involved and we can use whatever time you can spare.

The membership of the Chehalem Mountain Chapter is growing, and the energy and ideas coming from everyone are very exciting.  I’m looking forward to a very fun and educational 2011 with my CMC friends and their horses…. Sharon Knowlton
