North Willamette Valley Chapter News – March 2011

March 1st, 2011

NWVlogoHere we are in 2011.  Show entries for Spring Into Dressage are coming in and we are excited!  This year the Spring show is at Northwest Equestrian and Event Center in Boring Oregon.  The Dates are March 11 through 13.  We are looking for volunteers to come help us make this show a success.  Please contact us if you would like to volunteer.

Several of our chapter members were chosen for demo riders at the Intro to 2011 Test Clinic at Devon Wood Equestrian Center in February.  They were Marla Santino riding Enzo.  Helen Ferguson riding Toby and Andra Merick riding Wroxy.  All three did an excellent job.  And WOW what a large turn out of auditors for the event.

Some of our Chapter members are auditing the L Program at Devon Wood Equestrian Center.  I personally am looking forward to the next session.

Thank you ODS and Devon Wood for hosting these educational events.  They are very much appreciated.

I have just returned from the ODS Board Retreat at Silver Falls State Park.  I always have a good relaxing time there and get to meet new people who are willing to come forward and take responsibilities on committees to help promote Dressage and support ODS.  It takes volunteers to make programs happen for ODS Members.  I will be contacting chapter officers, asking for historical information of interest from the last 10 years, to be included in a new 40 Year Anniversary Book.  Oregon Dressage Society is Celebrating 40 Years this year at our Year End Awards Banquet in Portland Oregon this fall.

North Willamette Valley Chapters meeting are the 3rd Monday of the month.  Please check website for meeting locations and information.

Opportunity Classes are your chance to compete at a USEF/USDF/ODS-recognized show without paying any fees!

  • Opportunity Classes are intended to introduce prospective competitors to the world of USEF/USDF-recognized competition, but they are open to anyone.
  • Our Opportunity Classes DO count toward the high school equestrian letter program; they do not count toward any other awards program or qualifying requirement.
  • Dressage Opportunity Classes are exempt from all USEF, USDF and ODS membership requirements, horse recording requirements, and fees.
  • Dressage Opportunity Classes are run under USEF Dressage chapter rules. Dress and tack requirements apply, and you will be judged by a USEF-licensed dressage judge.
  • Horses entered in Opportunity Classes are subject to USEF drug rules and random drug testing, although the USEF drug/admin fee does not apply.

These Opportunity Classes are the perfect opportunity for you and your horse to try out USEF-recognized competition early in the show season, at minimal expense.

Michele Morseth, MA has been riding, training and showing her own horses since she was nine years old. Motivated to become a better dressage rider she studied under Jeff Haller, a renowned educator of the Feldenkrais Method® of body awareness and movement. Michele’s clinics are evolved from her love of riding and her training in horse and human movement, biomechanics, and communication. Realizing she had a gift to share—she began to help other riders feel the keen grace of moving in unity and communicating clearly with their horse.

North Willamette Valley Chapter News

September 8th, 2010

As the days are getting shorter and the days a bit cooler North Willamette Valley is planning some upcoming events that keep friends connected and our horses ridden. To help keep the communication open chapter members Helen Ferguson and Mike Bradney relaunched the chapter website.  Come take a look at http://ods-nwvchapter.com/ A big thank you to Helen and Mike for all the time and effort they put into the project.  Your help is really appreciated!

The chapter is excited to announce we are brining back the New Member Brunch.  On Sunday, November 7 we will meeting for brunch and the opportunity to get to know each other a bit more.  December brings the Christmas Party where we get to reveal our New Years resolutions (if you made your resolution you get a package of M&M’s – YUM) and make new resolutions for 2011.  Of course this is also a Pot Luck so lot’s of really good food.

The Silver Falls Camping and Trail Ride was a huge success so we have decided to schedule a 2nd annual camping trip in Summer 2011.  The dates will be finalized in the next few months and space is very limited so if you are interested keep your eyes open for further information.  Who knows, maybe we will need to get additional camp sites!

In the effort to get our horses ridden and our skills improved we will be offering clinics and scheduling events focused on specific topics of interest.  For example, our first event (to be announced shortly) will be watching a video on TTouch then spending a few minutes with some demo horses to try out the learned techniques.

In September we are offering a Sit the Trot Clinic at a special price.  Additional clinics will be announced shortly as well.  Keep an eye on the website for updates and information.  For more information on NWV – ODS contact Marla Santino [marlasa2002@yahoo.com]

North Willamette Valley Chapter – ODS Report

May 15th, 2010

North Willamette Valley has a lot to report.

With the renewed interest in rider safety our Chapter has scheduled a rider safety meeting on May 20 at 6 pm in Canby, OR.  Our speaker will be Todd Gary who is part of the Canby Fire Department and works closely with the Mollala High School Equestrian Team.  This meeting in open to non-members as well in hopes we can help get the word out about the importance of rider safety.  You can RSVP with Marla at marlasa2002@yahoo.com .

The chapter summer show is coming up quick, Summer Daze in Boring, OR.  This year’s theme is Christmas in July featuring a special “test of choice” division designed especially for anyone willing to dress themselves and their horses up in Christmas attire.  There is even a place to get additional points based on your festive presentation.  We are looking forward to this year’s event.

Also, the chapter has arranged for a horse camping and trail ride event July 23-26 at Silver Falls in Silverton, OR.  Members and friends are invited.  They can choose to camp any of the nights or just join up for a trail ride and lunch following.  We have secured the group camp site so there will be plenty of room.  The more the merrier.

August leads us into the Adult Camp currently scheduled to be held at Make you Mark Stables the weekend of August 27 – 29.  More information to come.

-Marla Santino, NWV Chapter VP
