UVC Shines Bright at Awards Banquet

January 9th, 2012

The Umpqua Valley Chapter was in the spotlight for the annual ODS awards banquet, as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations. Norma Talburt and Linda Sanders were co-winners of the Volunteer of the Year award. This highlighted the countless hours through the years that Norma and Linda have dedicated to the UVC. It was nice to get some statewide recognition for their many years of hard work. Congratulations ladies!

Norma was also selected as USDF Region 6 Volunteer of the Year as well! All winners of the state awards were eligible for the Region awards, however, only 1 winner for each category can be submitted. For that reason, Linda was not considered for the Regional award. The newsletter was submitted for the Chapter Newsletter of the Year, and it was selected as the winner! Yeah! The Newsletter that was submitted to ODS will be forwarded to the USDF Convention to be considered for the National Award . Thank you everyone who helps with the newsletter, especially Carol who converts it to a PDF file for me each month. We could not go paperless as a club without you!

A special thank you to Cindy Sanders who picked up the awards for us at the banquet, as none of the nominees were able to attend. That is two major awards in the UVC trophy case. As a special bonus, the awards were presented by Steffen Peters, who was present to teach a clinic! Cindy was lucky enough to shake his hand not once but twice! I wonder if she has washed it yet?

Our 16th Annual HPHHP Poker Ride held on September 18 was a huge success.  We had 116 adult and 12 youth riders.  Our oldest riding participant was 89 years young.  We also experimented with a Jackpot Trail Obstacle Course.  It was very well received.  Thanks to Linda Bezked and Cassi Soule’ for putting this together.  Everyone who ran through the course had a great time and their horses did very well.  We also have a couple games that riders could try and toss bean bags into.  Several participants tried it.  Was harder than they thought it would be.  We may try this at our Hearts and Horses Fun Show in February.  Our chapter is sponsoring the Spooktacular 4-H Horse Leaders Show at the Douglas County Fairgrounds on October 30.  This show is open to everyone and is supported by the horse community in Douglas County.

We will have election of officers at our October 12 meeting at Waldron’s Tom Tom Restaurant in Roseburg 7:00 p.m is meeting time and 6:30 p.m. be there to order off the menu.

Our chapter is looking forward to a great fall and the beginning of a new year.  Happy Riding.  Marilyn Ulicny, President, UVD&CT Chapter of ODS

The Umpqua Valley Combined Training and Dressage Chapter of the Oregon Dressage Society members have been very busy this summer.   Showing, trail riding, and just enjoying the Oregon sunshine with our horses.  We are in the process of finalizing our plans for our 15th Annual Benefit Poker Ride.  The date is September 18th at the Mildred Kanipe Memorial Park in Oakland Oregon. Also, e will have an easy competitive Trail Course that will be available to try your skills at.  The cost is $5.00 a run through. The first rider out for the Poker Ride is 9:00 and last rider out will be at 12:00.  The trail course hours are from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00p.m.  The funds raised for this event is used for our Horse People Helping Horse People Fund.  Funds in the past have been used primarily for Douglas County horse enthusiasts who need a little helping hand.  If you would like to come ride with us please call or e-mail Marilyn Ulicny, 541-673-6485 or foxtrailu@charter.net. Happy Riding!

Show Season in Full Swing

Although many shows at the end of May were postponed or cancelled, the season shifted into high gear in June. The ODS League Championship and HS Championship show was held at the Salem Fairgrounds June 4- 5. Jill Giri placed 4th in the Training Level Championship on Plain Jane. Marilyn Ulicny won her

T:3 class on Sunday in the open show, helped by a 9 on her free walk. Whitney Weston attended the NWEC at Aspen farms on a soggy Mother’s day weekend, and although the horses jumped well, elected not to run the full x-country course due to conditions. The ride a test and practice show was lots of fun,

with Geri Zickert taking the high point trophy. See the report below for all the details. Geri, Jill,

Marilyn, Cindy Sanders and Cassi Soule attended the rescheduled league show in Talent on 6/18. Everyone had a great time and the horses were all doing well. Cindy had a couple of young horses that were doing great for the first official trip off the farm and had solid tests at intro and training level. Marilyn earned a 2nd and a 5th on her spirited pony, Geri won her T:2 class on her score of 70%, which tied her for the AA high point. Unfortunately she placed second in the tiebreaker. Great Job Geri!!! Jill placed first in her 1:1 class on a score of 64.7% and 6th in 1:2 with 59% despite three 8’s in a competitive class. The win qualified PJ for the ODS League Championship at First level. Cassi Soule won the 1:2 and 1:3 on Debbie Beckland’s gelding Comet, earning a 9 on trot lengthenings and winning the Open high point.

Other tidbits:

the sun will come out

Wanted: Tall boots, size 8, 16 1/2 calf. If you know of anyone who has something to get rid of let me know. Contact Leanne McFarland.

Congratulations to Billi Davidson on the purchase of Black Diamond. Willy and Diamond will continue their training for the FEI 5 yr. old test, before he moves to Wishing Well Farm in Tenmile to train with Cindy Sanders.

Ed Miller is looking for member feedback on moving the ODS League Champ. Show back to Medford next year, please email him with input.

ODS is preparing to celebrate our 40th Anniversary at the banquet in October. As part of the celebration we would also like to take this opportunity to document and share chapter experiences and achievements over the past 10 years. Would you please begin to think about the legacy you would like to have your chapter leave in the ODS history books as it relates to the past 10 years? We encourage you to include pictures with your chapter overview. Please bring any input to the Aug 3 meeting, or Email Marilyn.

Luann Urban is looking for a home for her late father’s cat. The cat is a female around 7 or 8 years old, 15 pounds and has a real personality. She loves to sleep indoors and hang around while you are working, but will certainly go outside and play. Contact Luann w/ ?’s.

Umpqua Valley Chapter News – May 2011

May 15th, 2011

UVC-Logo

A chilly April kicked off the show season with several results in. The HS Dressage benefit show at Wishing Well Farms was well attended, despite ominous weather. High percentage Intro rider went to Samantha Smith with a 78.13%, High percentage Training level was Marilyn Ulicny with a 73.57%, High Percentage First Level went to Leanne Macfarlane with a 68.39%. High percentage Jr rider was Mckenna Foley and High percentage young rider was Katie Jensen. On the eventing side, Whitney Weston has had a busy April with an 8th and 12th at Twin Rivers HT, then a 1rst and 2nd at Aspen Farms Derby, moving up to intermediate with “Ted” at the
NEC Mothers Day Classic. Rain shortened the cross country day, but all 3 horses went well, with Ted jumping fast and clear at his first intermediate event! Whitney cancelled her trip to Woodside, CA May 22 due to concerns over the EHV-1 virus. Cassi Soule made her 4th level debut with Debbie Beckland’s gelding Goldsun at the Starr Vaughn dressage show in Elk Grove, CA. They scored a respectable 56 under some difficult riding conditions at the show.  The Salute to Dressage show in Talent, Or was rescheduled to 6/18 due to the Rhino outbreak. Correction from last months newsletter. I mistakenly reported that Leanne McFarland received first
place at second level riding 2nd:1 and 1st:3 on Thor with scores of 63%. In fact, her first level test score was a 68.39%, and her second level test score was 63%. My apologies.

Hearts and Horses Tons of Fun!

The numbers are in for the Hearts and Horses Fun show held on Feb. 13, and it was a huge success! There were over 45 riders in the variety of classes, all determined to have a good time. Some of the Very Little ones were at their first show and were stealing hearts left and right. The food sales were brisk, and the weather quite cooperative for Feb in Oregon, as the snow the next weekend reminded us all!  The break your heart bareback class was a crowd favorite, with  Cindy Sanders taking the top prize despite her pony’s best effort to buck her off. The jumping went smoothly and the games were tons of fun, even if Dad had to lead you through them! All in all, after the expenses were tallies the club made over $300 in profit. But more importantly than that, it was a fun activity for everyone in the community. This was well received enough that this may become an annual tradition for the club to put on. One suggestion at the meeting was for future profits to go into the HPHHP fund. A special thank you to all the volunteers who made this happen. Without Marilyn and Norma it would not have happened, but there were many more folks behind the scenes, so thank you to every one that helped. The club received a special thank you from the Brady family. Their girls Hannah and Nataly showed, and Nataly (3 years old) rode Buster (27) in their first show and had a great time.

Hi everyone,

Here is the Feb newsletter, UVC-Feb2011-News, and it’s not even March yet!

I had one small problem with the format this time. I wanted to insert photos from the Hearts and Horses show, but then the file was too big to email, so the photos are attached individually.  Bummer.
