We have had an incredible response to this event – not only from our members and friends through their registrations, but also from sponsors, vendors and donors for our auction.  The first 300 people registered will receive a “goodie bag” with coupons, samples and more (numbers are next to names on the registration list).

When you get to the event, please check in at the registration desk to obtain your badge and registration packet.  If you are registered for both days, you will only need to check in on Saturday (but don’t forget your badge for admittance Sunday!).

Other details:

• If you are signed up for the entire weekend but are NOT planning on coming for lunch or dinner on Saturday, please let the ODS office know so that we can give the hotel the most accurate seating count.
• Because this event is USDF University Credit Approved, there will be additional paperwork for you to fill out at registration, plus sign in sheets and evaluation forms for each educational session.  If you have not yet signed up for University Credit but wish to, you can take care of that when you arrive.
• If you have not yet volunteered, we are still seeking a few helpers for registration desk (early morning), to help sell ODS clothing/merchandise throughout the weekend and for silent auction check-out after the banquet.  We could also use some helpers at the ODS office on Tuesday the 1^st from 11 AM – 1 PM to stuff goodie bags and put together registration packets.
• We will have Restaurant Bonanza Raffle Tickets available all day Saturday – PLEASE consider supporting this raffle as the profits all go into the Linda Acheson Education Fund – $10.00 per ticket or 12 tickets for $100.00.  We have about 390 tickets remaining.  The winner will receive $500 in gift certificates from restaurants (2^nd place $250, 3^rd place $125).  If you are coming for Sunday only and wish to purchase raffle tickets – please contact the ODS Office to so so.

While equestrians should always strive to improve their horsemanship, Cathy believes magic happens for the equestrian when their confidence surpasses their riding technique. Cathy’s Gold Medal Programs complement traditional training, focusing solely on the vital ingredient of confidence for horse and rider. Show Biz –Scribe Training

Presented by Rose Newman
This class will be presented Saturday, November 5^th at 8 AM in the Mt. Adams Classroom

This session will break down the duties and responsibilities for this critical dressage show volunteer position.  Without scribes, a dressage show cannot be held. The primary function of the Scribe is to transcribe (put into writing) the Judge’s scores and comments onto the test scoring sheet, thereby allowing the Judge to maintain continuous visual contact with the horse and rider during a test.  Judges depend upon the Scribe to quickly, accurately, legibly, and quietly record the scores and comments made about each ride.  Scribing provides a unique opportunity for interested individuals to learn more about how shows are judged. This session will provide an overview of basic training for scribes (both newbies and those volunteers seeking a refresher course) – there will be instructions for proper spelling of the terminology, abbreviations used in dressage as well as a description of the protocol that comes with the duty.

About the Presenter: Rose Newman is currently the ODS President Elect, on several show management teams and is on multiple ODS Committees.  In addition, she managed the 2010 & 2011 USDF Region 6 Championship Show and serves on several national USDF committees as well.  She is active nationally as a volunteer and has been recognized multiple times as an ODS Volunteer of the Year as well as the Region 6 Volunteer of the Year. She lives in Vancouver, Washington and is a member of the Fort Vancouver Chapter – ODS.

Helping the Performance Horse – Diagnostic and Treatment Options at OSU

About the Presenter: Dr. Erica McKenzie graduated from Murdoch University in Western Australia in 1996 and has been on faculty at OSU since 2005. She is a boarded specialist in large animal medicine, and obtained her PhD working with Dr. Stephanie Valberg at the University of Minnesota studying dietary management of muscle disease in Thoroughbred racehorses. Dr McKenzie has a strong interest in human and animal exercise physiology and nutrition and her research work has focused on horses and racing sled dogs. She is a committee member for the international conference of equine exercise physiology and an honorary Diplomate of the new specialty college of veterinary sports medicine and rehabilitation.

ShowBiz  –  ”How to put on a successful dressage show”

Presented by Rose Newman and Siobhan Barker

This class will be presented Saturday, November 5th at from 1:30 – 5:00  PM in the Mt. St. Helens Classroom

The session will give an overview of the essentials of running a dressage show. The difference between USEF licensed, ODS league and schooling shows will be explained. In addition the particular roles and responsibilities of the manager and secretary before, during and after the show will be covered.

The session will be particularly useful for those who are planning a show, or for riders who are new to dressage or those who want to know what goes on behind the scenes.

About the Presenters:

Nutritional considerations for performance horses in health and disease

Lameness – From Clinical Exam to Advanced Imaging

Presented by Dr. Susan Emerson of Equine Performance
This class will be presented Saturday, November 5th at 3:30 PM in the Mt. Rainier Room

The talk will begin with a brief description of a complete lameness exam and the diagnostic process. This will lead naturally into the types of imaging we now have available to aid in diagnosing simple and complex lameness up to and including MRI. Cases will be used during the presentation to highlight points relevant to the diagnostic process as well as highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of different imaging modalities

About the Presenter: Dr. Susan Emerson arrived in the Northwest in May of 2006 to join Northwest Equine Performance as an intern, and subsequently staying on as an associate. She is a native of Ontario, Canada and has worked with and ridden horses for over 20 years. She has always had a special interest in lameness diagnosis. Dr. Emerson graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in Ontario, Canada in 2005. Followed by one year of private practice at the top Thoroughbred Racetrack in Canada where she had been involved in the veterinary medicine side of thoroughbred racing for the previous 7 years. Sue has a particular interest in musculo-skeletal diagnostic imaging including radiography, ultrasound, nuclear scintigraphy, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). She also has a very strong drive to continue to incorporate new and emerging therapies and hone her skills as a performance horse practitioner. Sue enjoys giving back to the industry through mentorship of students interested in veterinary medicine, educational talks to horse owners and veterinary groups, as well as acting as the Team Veterinarian for the USEA Young Rider Team for Area VII. In her spare time, Sue enjoys hiking, photographing beautiful Oregon, and playing tennis.

Hillsboro, Oregon: The Oregon Dressage Society, Inc. (ODS) announces the six selected demonstration horse/rider combinations who will be riding in the upcoming Steffen Peters symposium on November 6^th at the DevonWood Equestrian Centre in Sherwood, Oregon.

The selected combinations include:

• Dr. Barbara Crabbe, DVM, an adult amateur of Oregon City, OR, riding Bel Aire, a 5 year old 16.2 hand Dutch Warmblood Mare (KWPN) – Training Level
• Anna Keenan, a 20-year-old young rider of Dexter, OR, riding Lena, a 5-year old 16.2 hand Hanoverian Mare – Second Level
• Cristy Wilkerson, an adult amateur of Ravensdale, WA, riding Vivagenda, a 9 year old 16.2 hand Dutch Warmblood Mare  (KWPN) – Third Level

Demonstration horse/rider combinations were selected by a 5-member volunteer committee compromised of ODS members from across the Pacific Northwest.  Selection criteria included the necessity for the demonstration horse to be able to work in a chaotic environment, being able to perform all movements at the level on the application, and the rider’s acknowledgement in their role as a demo rider and agreement to respectfully follow all requests and instructions made by the clinician.   “We had 53 horse/rider combinations apply to be demo riders at this event,” stated Rachel Merusi, the selection committee chair.   “The committee had a tough time narrowing the selections down to six combinations.”   The committee made an effort to include multiple breeds of horses, to equally include professional riders, adult amateurs and junior/young riders and to incorporate horse/rider combinations from across the ODS regions.

In addition to the six scheduled symposium horse/rider combinations selected by the committee, Steffen Peters has agreed to work with Para-Equestrian Lise Yervasi of Baker City, OR.   Yervasi was originally diagnosed with ALS (“Lou Gehrig’s Disease) in 2009 however she actually suffers from a rare autoimmune motor neuron disorder.  She received her international grade certificate of Grade IV Para-Equestrian (which is equivalent to Third Level) at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Kentucky.   Yervasi’s horse is a 12 year old 17 hand US bred Hanoverian named Brendan Braveheart.  Brendan Braveheart is the infamous Olympic mount Brentina’s brother who was gifted to Yervasi by retired Olympic and Para-Equestrian Dressage Judge Libby Anderson from Jupiter, Florida.

The Steffen Peters symposium will be held as a part of the ODS Fall Festival and 40^th Anniversary Celebration.  The ODS Fall Festival will be kicked off on Saturday, November 5^th at the Shilo Inn – Portland Airport.  The day will be compromised of classroom education, a lunchtime presentation by Portland’s own internationally recognized equestrian photographer Mary Cornelius, a 40^th Anniversary Celebration in the afternoon and an evening annual Special Awards Banquet.  Olympian Steffen Peters will make a rare Oregon appearance during the ODS Fall Festival to speak at the ODS anniversary banquet and to give a symposium as part of Oregon Dressage Society’s continued commitment to dressage education for riders of all ages and experience levels.

Peter’s highlights include being named to three US Olympic teams; Bronze medals at the Olympics and World Equestrian Games , FEI World Cup Champion, Champion of Dressage at Aachen, Germany and two time USEF Equestrian of the Year.   Last summer, Peters swept the small tour in Aachen, Germany astride one mount and scored exceptionally well with another.  Then, in September, he went 6 for 6 at the 2011 US Dressage Championships in New Jersey.

Peters will be arriving in Portland fresh from the Pan Am Games – the one international event he has yet to dominate.  The U.S. won team gold at the last two Pan Ams, in Santo Domingo in 2003 and Rio de Janeiro in 2007, and in Rio also claimed the individual gold and silver medals.  Peters, of San Diego, California, has won individual and team medals before but never team gold.  “Of course the individual medals will be interesting, but my priority and 90 percent of this whole adventure is the team effort. That’s what I’m so excited about,” said Peters to the Chronicle of the Horse in September.   Born in Germany , Peters has been in the United States since 1985 and became a U.S. citizen in 1992.  He is a 3-time Olympic dressage team member and world renowned instructor – trainer – rider.

The excitement is building for the Fall Festival!  The banquet promises to be a really big night with our awards, anniversary and Steffen Peters.  Now, we need the silent auction, our main fundraiser, to match strides with the significance of the occasion. To ensure success, we need the support of our membership in donating and/or procuring items or services for this event.

Please contact me, Wendy Redhouse, with any items you have for our auction.  Here are the instructions for making a donation:

1. Complete a donation form for every item; a copy should stay with the donor as receipt for their tax deductible gift – download the form here.
2. Send form and item to Wendy Redhouse or to the ODS office; items may be delivered to the banquet site but must arrive early for set up.
3. A procurement letter is available if you would like to use it for solicitation.  I will gladly mail you any forms or letters, or you may pull them from the ODS website here.
4. Donated items will be posted on the ODS website as we receive them – view that webpage here.
5. Please confirm all donations by October 15th, 2011.

I will do my best to facilitate your donation, so do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions or need assistance.

Thank you all so much for your support!  And don’t forget to sign up for the Fall Festival so that you can attend the Auction on Saturday, November 5^th.

Dear ODS Members,

USDF has given USDF University Approval for the ODS Fall Festival program with Steffen Peters, Dr. Erika McKenzie, Dr. Susan Emerson, and Rose Newman to be held on November 5-6, 2011.  The course number is #102027, for a maximum of 3 credit(s).

In order for USDF University Credit to count, ODS must collect $5 from each current USDF member requesting credit.  If you don’t care about receiving credit, you don’t have to pay the fee – it is optional.  You may pre-pay the fee on our website/by sending a check to the ODS Office, or you may pay the fee on site the morning of the event.

The USDF University program provides recognition for USDF members who strive to continue their dressage education through their participation in USDF educational programs.  It also provides an accreditation structure, allowing members to earn USDF credit for participating in accredited programs conducted by GMOs and other groups.  Other programs offered recently with USDF University approval in Oregon include last January’s “Intro to the Tests” clinic and last spring’s ODS/USDF “L” Education Program.  To read more about the UDSF University Program, please visit: http://www.usdf.org/education/university/.
