ODS Breeders Showcase I & II

August 4th, 2010

We ask you: From where will your next dressage star come?

Here is an opportunity to see what high quality horses are being bred in the Northwest.

Mary C Image 2010

Oregon Dressage Society Breeders Showcase will be held August 14 & 15, 2010 at the Mt. Hood Equestrian Center in Boring, OR.

For those of you who are breeders or support breeders, THIS IS YOUR SHOW! We need your support. If you haven’t sent an entry in, please do so now. We also need volunteers both days. Of course, sponsors are always welcome! We don’t want this show to become a victim of the poor economy. It is an important show because it is the only dressage sporthorse show held by the Oregon Dressage Society in the state of Oregon. It is the only show that wholly supports the breeders, owners and trainers of dressage sport horses – horses bred to excel in the dressage ring.

If you are interested in awards, you can earn two of the required three scores necessary to be eligible for USDF Horse of the Year or All Breed awards. In fact, NEW this year: If you have four scores, you can drop the lowest score. Then the mean will be the “new” middle score. If your quick with your math, you can see this is a real advantage. The end result is a higher score. Oregon Dressage Society year-end awards require scores from just two competitions.

The closing date has been extended until August 12, 2010. No late fees!

Classes 284 & 384 Grand Championships, were originally omitted but are now added back. Champion and Reserve Champion from classes 226/326, 230/330, 234/334, 237/337 and 239/339 are eligible for these classes. The 2010 Great American Insurance Group/ USDF Breeders’ Championship Series Qualifiers are classes 226/326, 230/330, 234/334, 237/337, and 239/339.

Sharps containers are located in the main barn aisle.

After this show, the only show left in the 2010 Great American Insurance Group USDF Breeders’ Championship Northwest Series is the Breeders Classic, sponsored by the Northwest Sport Horse Breeders Association. The show is Sept 3 – 5, 2010, in Spanaway, WA. You can pick up two more scores, and show in the Hunter Breeding division, too!

As a SPECIAL ADDED ATTRACTION this year, Jos Sevriens, our DSHB judge for Saturday, will be giving a lecture on Saturday evening titled “Developing Your Eye”. This is a subject you can’t study enough. Trainers, riders and breeders: Do you want to know how to pick a good horse that will be successful in the dressage ring? Come listen to Jos at 7 PM. There might even be dessert!

Please contact Barbara Tuohino Funk, 360-687-5477 or 360-601-1713, or ODS@dovecreekonline.com for further information.

2011 SHOW APPROVALS – EXCITING NEWS!!  The ODS Shows Committee and the ODS Office have launched a new Show Approval webpage which has all of the information you need about ODS Show Approval in one place, including an updated application for 2011, the updated ODS Show Standards and ability to pay online.  By repeated member request, rather than waiting until the fall, the ODS Office is prepared to add shows to the online calendar as soon as they are processed, so beat the rush and turn your application in today (several shows have already)!

Here is the link: http://www.oregondressage.com/news/oregon-dressage-society-show-approvals/

A few updates to this year’s show standards:

  • Our office is no longer able to bill out for show approvals.  Payment must be received WITH the application – either fax/e-mail the application and pay online using PayPal, or mail the application with check enclosed, please.
  • The ODS Shows Committee is asking that at least one member of your show management team is a current ODS member in good standing.  If this poses a difficulty to your show, please contact Rose Newman directly – rose_newman@yahoo.com
  • The ODS Shows Committee is urging shows to not turn in their applications with TBAs if possible.

Please contact me directly if you have any questions or experience difficulty with the form.

- Young Horse Classes

Please contact the show secretary, Kaye Phaneuf Phaneuf@Canby.com, if you have any questions about registering for any of these three classes.

Opportunity classes:

NEW! Intended for Training and First Level dressage riders who want to ‘test the waters’ of USEF/USDF-recognized competition without the expense of joining these organizations or paying their non-member fees.  USEF rules apply, including dress and saddlery.  However, entries that do not cross-enter into non-Opportunity classes are exempt from all membership requirements and fees for USEF, USDF, CDS and ODS. Opportunity classes will not count toward championship qualifications or year-end awards for any of these organizations.

The Cascade Dressage Shows are offering four Opportunity classes each day – two at Training Level and two at First Level. All entries received for Opportunity classes at will be wait listed.  If ride times are available when entries close on May  26, then the Opportunity classes will be offered, with entries processed in postmark order, until all ride times are filled.

Materiale classes:

We are offering Materiale classes on both Saturday and Sunday in the following categories: Three-year-old Fillies, Three-year old Colts and Geldings, Four & Five-year old Mares, and Four

& Five-year old Stallions and Geldings. Classes for fillies and mares may not be combined with classes for colts, geldings or stallions. Three-year-olds must be at least 36 months of age as of the competition date. Materiale is a group class; all entries are in the ring at once. Horses will be evaluated according to the criteria listed on the “USDF Materiale Class Scoresheet” (below).

  • Directives: Movement should demonstrate purity & quality (clear rhythm, regularity & relaxation) (judged mainly in profile), correctness (judged mainly coming to & going from judge). Movement at trot and canter should be light & springy. Should have scope & volume, maintaining uphill balance. Must show rideability, potential to become competitive dressage horse & potential to progress through the levels. Horse must be riding horse type.
  • Walk (30%): Four even beats, straight, active & even strides, correctly aligned steps, articulation of joints, freedom of shoulders & haunches, balance, elastic & swinging back, overstep, reach, ground-covering with marching quality.
  • Trot (30%): Two even beats, straight, active & even strides, correctly aligned steps, articulation of joints, freedom of shoulders & haunches, balance, elasticity, swinging back, natural engagement & impulsion from hindquarters, suspension, power from upward thrust & roundness.
  • Canter (30%): Three even beats, straight, active & even strides, correctly aligned steps, articulation of joints, freedom of shoulders & haunches, balance, elasticity, swinging back, natural engagement & impulsion from hindquarters, suspension, power from upward thrust, roundness & “uphill” strides.
  • General Impression (10%): Includes harmony (relationship of conformation to movement), athleticism (strength & mobility), development related to age & condition. Demonstrates character, presence & temperament necessary for training.

Young Horse classes:

The FEI has written special tests to evaluate the potential of young horses to become international-calibre dressage mounts.  5- and 6-year-olds each have their own test. The USEF has written a test for 4-year-olds, for which the overall directive is: “To find horses with elastic natural gaits, trained in a correct way according to the age, which can reach higher dressage levels.” These tests are intended to demonstrate quality and potential, rather than mastery of movements and precise geometry.

In Young Horse tests, two S judges sit together at C and collaborate on their evaluations. It is preferred that the judges give their comments and scores to the rider via loudspeaker, so that the audience can hear them, too. To download the FEI tests, click here: http://www.horsesport.org/disciplines/dressage/technical-info. USEF members may download the 4-Year-Old test here: https://www.usef.org/documents/disciplines/dressage/tests/4YEAROLDTEST.pdf
