September President Note

September 1st, 2010

The Century Club was formed at The Dressage Foundation in 1996 to recognize Dressage riders and horses whose combined age totals 100 years or more.  To be eligible to be a Club Member horse and rider must perform a Dressage test of any level, at a Dressage show or event, and is scored by a Dressage judge or professional.

The Dressage Foundation provides a beautiful black and gold ribbon and a handsome Century Club Award bearing the names of the rider and horse, the year of their ride, and team number.

Not just one, but two!  We have had two new members of the Century Club from Oregon so far this year.  Norma Talburt of Roseburg completed her Century Ride aboard her 31 yr old mare Lady of Fame, aka Joni. Norma’s Training Level test 1 ride was performed at an ODS approved League Show in Roseburg April 25.  Norma is Treasurer of the Umpqua Valley Chapter of ODS and is active in a variety of other horse related organizations.  Check the ODS website news page for more interesting information about Norma.

Barbara Larson of Grants Pass rode training level test 2 for her Century Ride at Tulelake June 27 on a borrowed horse named Lynx N Willy.  The inclusion of an Opportunity Class (new addition for 2010) made the ride possible. Barbara is a long time member of ODS.

The Dressage Foundation now has 72 members, four of whom are from Oregon, and I might add, all four are from Southern Oregon.  Besides Norma and Barbara, other Oregon Century Club members are Dave Keiser of Medford, and Winnie Heiney-Duncan of Malin.

ODS Dues to increase

The ODS summer Board meeting took place in Eugene July 31.   As I have reported before in the February and May columns, there have been significant increases in costs associated with ODS membership benefits since the last dues increase in 2004, most notably the increase in USDF dues, increased subscription rates for Flying Changes Magazine, postage and printing costs.  ODS is currently operating on a lower per capita income than we were in 2004.  The bottom line is that the current ODS dues cannot cover the increased costs for next year.  The Board approved proposals prepared by the Finance Committee to restructure the dues as follows:

Adult Member                   $75

Junior Member                  $55

Business Member             $200

Patron Member                $125

Lifetime Member              no longer being offered

After the fixed costs, the dues increase still does not provide the same level of funds as we had in 2004 for operation of the ODS office and programs.  Obviously we are taking some steps to reduce operational costs as well.

Last year we started a program which allowed you to renew ODS when you renew your USDF membership on line.  New for this year is that you will have the option to list your Group Member Organization (GMO) on the USDF card when you renew Participating Memberships.  If you choose the option, ODS will appear on your USDF card.  It will be sufficient membership evidence eliminating the necessity for two ID cards for ODS approved show applications.

Last year you were given the opportunity to “opt out” of various ODS publications as a cost savings measure.  Unfortunately it didn’t go as well as we hoped.  It resulted in some miscommunication with members and also unintentionally resulted in losing our bulk mailing rate for some publications, thereby increasing costs.  This year the “opt out” will apply to all publications; it will be all or none.  If you select “opt out” it means you will not receive the Omnibus, Roster, or Test Booklet.  If you don’t need the publications, please “Opt Out” to save us the printing and postage expense.

New member benefit

I’m pleased to announce a new member benefit.  ODS and Shiloh Inns have reached an agreement for Shilo Inns to be an Official Host Hotel of the Oregon Dressage Society.  Shilo Inns will offer ODS members approximately 20% discount on room rates.  Members have to request the Oregon Dress Society contracted rate at the time reservations are made (1-800-222-2244) or book on line at WWW. Shiloinns.com with special rate code “ORDRESS.”  Some locations may have blackout dates.

Show standards and approval process

The ODS Show Committee has been hard at work improving the standards and procedures for ODS Approved Show applications.  Shows are approved for the purposes of ODS Awards and ODS Championship qualification purposes.  Be sure to check the ODS website for current standards and application procedures on the show management page.

One significant change show standard change is at least one member of your show management team (i.e. manager or secretary) must be a current ODS member in good standing.

Another very significant change is that ODS will no longer bill for show approvals.  Show applications must be accompanied by payment before they are accepted for processing.   Show approval applications can now be completed on line and submitted electronically.  The application page on the website contains a pdf version of the application which can be completed out on line and then either e-mailed, faxed, or printed out and mailed into the office.  The application page also provides the opportunity to pay online using PayPal.  If PayPal is not used, the application must be accompanied by a check.

Voting Procedures

ODS is in the process of revising procedures and setting up mechanisms to allow for voting of the Board of Directors and Regional Representative electronically.  The voting process will be through the USDF website and will work similar to the current process for voting for USDF regional delegates.  Paper ballots will also be available upon request.  We estimate that voting costs by will be about half the first year by minimizing printing and mailing costs.   Subsequently set up costs will be minimal and savings will be even greater.

Annual ODS Awards Banquet and annual meeting

Mark your calendars.  The annual ODS Awards Banquet will be held in Eugene October 23.  Plans are underway for educational events during the day preceding the banquet.  The silent auction chairperson is looking for some help from the Portland area to assist with the auction.  The helper would contact people (tack stores, feed stores) and also would need to help get items to the auction / pick up.  Contact Sally Temple (541-935-7567) if you can help.  The Banquet will be followed up by the annual ODS membership meeting and ODS fall Board meeting on Sunday October 24.

Region 6 Youth Camp

ODS sponsored the first ever Regional Youth Camp held on July 9-11 at DevonWood Equestrian Center in Sherwood, OR.   The purpose of the event is to help raise funds for the Region 6 Team, develop a scouting mechanism in order to find and foster young riders, as well as develop a sense of “team” amongst the youth in our sport.

ODS Board member Jessicca Rattner organized the event along with Heather Oleson.  Needless to say the first time takes a tremendous effort to pull off.

DevonWood generously donated their facility, countless volunteers donated time and energy, and 6 Instructors gave freely of their talents, time and expenses for 3 days to the nearly 40 Junior/Young riders that were in attendance. All the young riders were appreciative of the opportunity to ride with and learn from the experiences of our Region’s past NAYRC riders.  Instructors were very positive about their experience.

About $2000 was raised for the Region 6 team.

Adult Amateur Camp

Blue Mountain Dressage Camp for adult amateur riders is being held by the North East Oregon Chapter in LaGrande September 10-12.  The camp features Jennifer Schrader-Williams.  Riders must be ODS members.  Auditors welcome.  Contact Zoe Wallace (541-963-9249) or Connie Dunham (541-426-3315).  The Camp is made possible by a Connie Keith Grant from ODS.

USDF Youth Sportsman’s Award

USDF will be selecting a national nominee for the USEF Youth Sportsman’s Award. The USDF national nominee will be submitted as a candidate to USEF for consideration as the overall Youth Sportsman’s Awards winner as well as being nominated for the USEF Junior Equestrian of the Year Award. USDF seeks nominees who demonstrate an ongoing commitment and dedication to both USDF and USEF through their promotion of the horse. The USDF national nominee shall receive a complementary one-year USDF youth participating membership and shall be recognized by USEF with a six-day, all-expense paid career opportunity workshop at the USEF national headquarters in Lexington, Kentucky. Nominations should be submitted to USDF by October 1.

ODS Breeders Showcase I & II

August 4th, 2010

We ask you: From where will your next dressage star come?

Here is an opportunity to see what high quality horses are being bred in the Northwest.

Mary C Image 2010

Oregon Dressage Society Breeders Showcase will be held August 14 & 15, 2010 at the Mt. Hood Equestrian Center in Boring, OR.

For those of you who are breeders or support breeders, THIS IS YOUR SHOW! We need your support. If you haven’t sent an entry in, please do so now. We also need volunteers both days. Of course, sponsors are always welcome! We don’t want this show to become a victim of the poor economy. It is an important show because it is the only dressage sporthorse show held by the Oregon Dressage Society in the state of Oregon. It is the only show that wholly supports the breeders, owners and trainers of dressage sport horses – horses bred to excel in the dressage ring.

If you are interested in awards, you can earn two of the required three scores necessary to be eligible for USDF Horse of the Year or All Breed awards. In fact, NEW this year: If you have four scores, you can drop the lowest score. Then the mean will be the “new” middle score. If your quick with your math, you can see this is a real advantage. The end result is a higher score. Oregon Dressage Society year-end awards require scores from just two competitions.

The closing date has been extended until August 12, 2010. No late fees!

Classes 284 & 384 Grand Championships, were originally omitted but are now added back. Champion and Reserve Champion from classes 226/326, 230/330, 234/334, 237/337 and 239/339 are eligible for these classes. The 2010 Great American Insurance Group/ USDF Breeders’ Championship Series Qualifiers are classes 226/326, 230/330, 234/334, 237/337, and 239/339.

Sharps containers are located in the main barn aisle.

After this show, the only show left in the 2010 Great American Insurance Group USDF Breeders’ Championship Northwest Series is the Breeders Classic, sponsored by the Northwest Sport Horse Breeders Association. The show is Sept 3 – 5, 2010, in Spanaway, WA. You can pick up two more scores, and show in the Hunter Breeding division, too!

As a SPECIAL ADDED ATTRACTION this year, Jos Sevriens, our DSHB judge for Saturday, will be giving a lecture on Saturday evening titled “Developing Your Eye”. This is a subject you can’t study enough. Trainers, riders and breeders: Do you want to know how to pick a good horse that will be successful in the dressage ring? Come listen to Jos at 7 PM. There might even be dessert!

Please contact Barbara Tuohino Funk, 360-687-5477 or 360-601-1713, or ODS@dovecreekonline.com for further information.

Century Club Ride: Norma Talburt

July 29th, 2010

2010-NormaTalburt

Having been born and raised in Roseburg, Oregon, Norma’s Grandpa started her riding at 18 months of age on a pony that her mother rode as a little girl. The pony died at age 32 leaving Norma with nothing to ride. As a 9 year old, horse crazy girl and no horse, she started riding her Grandpa’s milk cow! He insisted that her folks find Norma a horse to save the milk production. She was given an older spotted large pony that put up with all her love and attention. Grandpa’s ranch was on a dirt road and they raced any car that happened by, herded sheep on the steep hills, and wore out all the sleds he made for them to pull. Even though Roseburg was considered home, Norma spent weekends and summers at the ranch until it was sold around 1962. The 380-acre sheep ranch was located on Tyee Road, 18 miles downriver of the Umpqua Store.

Norma’s next horse was a “barn sour devil” that made many a fast trip home with or without her. He was good at Gymkhana events and taught her a whole new phase of riding. Norma wanted nothing to do with boys unless they had a way to haul her horse to the Gaming shows. English riding wasn’t available in Roseburg at that time so all her riding was Western.

Norma’s first introduction to English riding and Jumping was at Oregon State College with Paul Rutland in the PE classes. She was hooked on this new way of riding and never stopped. Norma taught English riding at Camp Tamarack, which is located just outside the city of Sisters in central Oregon, for two summers and has been helping young riders ever since.

Norma’s first Dressage showing was on a MULE in Eventing! She was one of the first riders to show mules in Eventing in the US. She showed in Open Shows and Mule Shows and helped open the Dressage world to mules. Norma had hoped to make her Century ride on her 17 hand mule, “Firecracker”, but old age took him a little too soon at the age of 24. Norma then turned to her 31-year old AQHA mare named “Lady of Fame”, who is most affectionately called “Jonie” by almost everyone.

Norma has currently been a member of the Umpqua Valley Dressage and Combined Training Chapter of the Oregon Dressage Society for 22 years and is their current Treasurer. She has been a 4-H leader for 42 years helping many riders in English, Western, Jumping and Dressage. She helped with the local Pony Club for many years and continues to do so to this day. Norma helped coach, hauled horses, and provided horses for the Challengers Equestrian Team of the Oregon Special Olympics. She’s also a long time member of the Douglas County Mounted Posse, the Umpqua Harness Driving Club, and Oregon Mr. Longears Club. And finally, Norma is a volunteer with the Douglas County Sheriffs Dept. Animal Abuse and Neglect program run by the Animal Control Dept. located in Roseburg, Oregon.

Winners of YoungSt(a)r Spotlight

June 21st, 2010

Alamo, California, USA – June 21, 2010 – DressageTrainingOnline.com, announced the first ever YoungSt(a)r Spotlight grant, back in October 2009. This educational tour grants monies to a minimum of 6 chosen Young Dressage Horse enthusiasts! The monies will be spent on airfare, lodging, transportation and attendance to a prearranged hosted trip to Germany centered around the 2010 Bundeschampionate. Directly in line with those dates will be a private tour going to visit top young horse trainers, riders and breeders. Additional exclusive small forums and discussions with many of the world’s most knowledgeable and successful in this specific area will be additional pieces to this tour. Educational segments led by DTO feature partner trainer, Dr. Ulf Moeller, head trainer of the famed PSI sporthorses, Michael Klimke, Ingo Pape and numerous FEI judges, well versed in young horse evaluation.  To walk away with a grounded understanding of what to look for and how to develop outstanding young dressage horses is the focus of this program. The tour will be led  primarily by the USA’s official USEF Young Dressage Horse Coach and Trainer Scott Hassler, who has trained and developed over 25 horses to the Grand Prix level and Reisa Bonetti, Founder of DressageTrainingOnline.com, who has sponsored the grant as an opportunity to lend a hand toward the education and success of the USA in the future development and success of up and coming grand prix horses.

“The educational tour developed out of the obvious need for further learning around “proper” development of the young horse. They are so different mentally and physically from an older more confirmed horse. I see so much struggling from the majority of owners of young horses, dreams that may not come true and mixed messages from the competitive young horse community in America. I saw a real need for better more in depth information, coming from those who have been there, done that…, so I decided to throw my hat into the ring for making a difference in that area of our Dressage Community.” Says founder of DressageTrainingOnline, Reisa Bonetti.  “This tour is sure to be so valuable to the participants, if each of the attendees are able to positively affect a handful of horses, it is a success! The plan is to be able to grow the monies needed for increased tour attendance and provide this grant on an annual basis.”

The winners were chosen based on their experience with developing young dressage horses, their proven dedication and passion around making this a focus of their career and nominations and references submitted to DressageTrainingOnline.com  from their supporters.

DTO is making the first time announcement of the following individuals as recipients of the first annual YoungSt(a)r Spotlight: Jamee Amundson of Colorado, Alyssa Pitts of Oregon, Kelly Krambs of California, Benjamin Pfabe of Virginia, Brandi Benedict of  Virginia, Lauren Ball Tisdale of Ohio and our 2 runners up are Lisa Pembleton of Florida and Linda Shultz of Kentucky.

Congratulations to all of our winners! Follow DressageTrainingOnline.com, online, on facebook , twitter and through our newsletter.
