Exception: shows hosted by organizations other than ODS Chapters outside of the state of Oregon or Clark County, Washington, the $1/per ride down the centerline or DSHB go applies only to ODS Members – show secretaries MUST cross reference the most current ODS membership list posted on the ODS website and be sure to charge this fee to all ODS members.

Exception: for breed restricted shows (Arabian, Morgan, etc), the $1/per ride down the centerline or DSHB go applies only to ODS Members – show secretaries MUST cross reference the most current ODS membership list posted on the ODS website and be sure to charge this fee to all ODS members.

If you ride in a show approved by ODS that is subject to an exception listed above, it is your responsibility to declare your ODS member number and to pay the ODS Awards Fee to the show’s secretary. Shows approved by ODS but subject to either exception may or may not have a space in their entry form for ODS Awards Fees – please be “heads up” in these situations!

Please contact Edwin A. Miller, the chair of the ODS Awards Committee at eamgroup@aol.com or (541) 482-2902 if you have a question about this procedure, or contact the ODS Office at office@oregondressage.com if you are not sure you have paid in for awards at shows with exceptions.

Günter Seidel, the three-time U.S. Olympic bronze medalist, will campaign the California-owned Fandango for a place on the American team for the London Games this summer.

Fandango, owned by Marie Meyers of Moorpark, California, is a 17-year-old Oldenburg gelding (Feinbrand x St. Urgard x Figaro) that has been competed by Marie in California, mostly at national shows but at CDIs in Thermal and Burbank in 2010.

The arrangement for Günter, aged 51 of Cardiff, California, to campaign the horse through August of this year was made with the help of Ed and Camille Penhoet of Toyon Farm in Napa Valley in Northern California.

“I am thrilled that Marie made this opportunity available and that Camille and Ed’s gracious support is making it possible. I know the horse really well and he’s a super talent,” Günter said. “Right now we’re focused on getting ready for the upcoming selection trials.”

In addition to his Olympic success, he was also on the World Equestrian Games team that won silver at Spain in 2002 and bronze at Aachen, Germany, in 2006.

With Fandango, he participated in an exhibition at the 2009 World Cup Final in Las Vegas with his “Phantom of the Opera” themed Pas de Deux.

Under his owner, Marie Meyers, Fandango was the 2008 Intermediaire II U.S. Dressage Federation Horse of the Year, and finished fourth in the 2006 U.S. National Championships at small tour.

Günter rode horses for Jane and Dick Brown for more than two decades until the partneship ended last year which left him without an Olympic prospect until now.

Nominations for the 2012 ODS Futurity are due January 31, 2012

The ODS Futurity consists of riding two tests at the ODS Championship Show in September – USEF Training Level Test 3 and USEF First Level Test 1. The futurity is open to all horses four to six years of age who have not shown at First Level or above (or equivalent test) prior to nomination (including ODS League shows). The point scores from both tests will be added and the highest total will determine the winner. Both owner and rider of the horse must be ODS members in good standing at the time of the futurity; owner need not be the rider. Horse must be nominated each year and have fees paid each year prior to competition. To review all of the ODS Futurity Rules and to make a nomination, please visit http://www.oregondressage.com/2012_omnibus/2012-Futurity.pdf. Refer to ODS Championship Show Omnibus listing for futurity class entry fees and other show fees that may apply.

Applications for Participants in Part 2 of the USDF “L” Education Program are due February 1, 2012

Oregon Dressage Society is proud to be hosting the second part of the USDF “L” Education Program in 2012. This program is especially important for ODS because of the tremendous opportunity for learning this program offers participants of Part 1 and of the continuing education opportunity this program provides for current “L” program graduates. Additionally, the ODS League Show approval requires at least an “L” graduate to be used as an official. Having candidates successfully complete this program will increase the pool of available officials for approved ODS League Shows. The application period for the USDF “L” Education Program, Part II presented by ODS in 2012 is now open. Part II consists of Sessions D1, D2, Sitting/Scribing with “R” or “S” Judges and the Final Exam. Only 10 participants can be accepted and a few slots are still available. Auditors are not permitted. Candidates will selected on a first come first served basis. Please refer to the ODS website (http://www.oregondressage.com/lprogram.html) for further information, criteria and the application form.

Thank you,

Lexington, KY – Continuing with preparations for the 2012 Olympic Games, the United States Equestrian Team Foundation (USET) and United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) kicked off 2012 with two training sessions for Dressage Olympic hopefuls. Betsy Juliano graciously opened the doors of her Havensafe Farm South to riders in Wellington, FL, January 6-8. The following weekend, Steffen Peters hosted a session for West coast riders at his Arroyo Del Mar farm in San Diego, CA. Also taking place in California, the first USEF Developing Dressage Clinic of 2012 was held at Epona Farms, owned by Michael and Linda Fowler in Thousand Oaks, CA.

The USET/USEF pre-Olympic Games clinics, made possible by a gift from Betsy Juliano to the USET Foundation, featured instruction from USEF Technical Advisor and Coach Anne Gribbons and Olympian Steffen Peters. At the Florida clinic were seven horses (six riders) including 2011 Pan American Games Team Gold and Individual Silver medalists Heather Blitz and Paragon. Over three days the combinations worked with Peters and Gribbons individually, rode the Olympic Grand Prix Special and reviewed video of the tests with Gribbons.

In California four combinations honed their skills over the two-day session. Participating in the California clinic was USEF grant recipient Kathleen Raine with her mare Breanna. Gribbons praised the pair’s progress stating, “They had their best foot forward and showed a real improvement after the USEF grant supported training and show tour in Europe this fall. The mare just went to a national show and received a score of 74% in the Grand Prix Special. After working with Peters and me on day one, she went through the test on day two and proved she had earned the score from the show. Raine’s home trainer, Christine Traurig, was present both days, and she has every reason to be pleased with the way her student is progressing.”

Steffen Peters, Anne Gribbons, Christine Traurig and Kathleen Raine on Breanna (USEF Archive)

Focusing on the development of the next generation of U.S. dressage talent, the USEF Developing Dressage Clinic at Epona Farms included nine horses with seven riders. Under the guidance of USEF Developing Dressage Coach, Debbie McDonald, these combinations worked to polish movements and improve training practices. Renowned U.S. dressage rider Leslie Morse presented two up-and-coming horses at the clinic, Fluer and Excalibur. Other participants included David Blake with Royal Prinz and Lord Albert, Rebecca Rigdon with Solei, Brian Hafner with Lombardo LHF, Elizabeth Ball with Avanti, Oryla Wiedoeft with Galanta, and Barbi Breen-Gurley with Vindicator. The 2012 USEF Developing Dressage Program, including these clinics with McDonald, has been made possible by a gift from USET Foundation Trustee Akiko Yamazaki/Red Husky Foundation.

From Dressage-News.com

LEXINGTON, Kentucky, Dec. 4–The U.S. Dressage Federation announced Sunday it will launch head-to-head championships of all levels for adult amateurs and open riders from Training through Grand Prix beginning in 2013.

The USDF said its Board of Governors approved the championship of head-to-head competition for Adult Amateur and Open riders at Training Level through Grand Prix in the Fall of 2013 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. U.S. national levels are at Training, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

Qualification will be through the USDF Regional Dressage Championships in the nine geographic regions that make up the organization that will celebrate its 40th anniversary in the first year of the national championships.

USDF President George Williams described the decision as an “exciting day for American dressage and, in particular, out adult amateur competitors.

The first formal discussions within the USDF about a national championship began 20 years ago, he said.

Few details were released, including how the USDF national championships would fit with national championships organized by the U.S. Equestrian Federation, the governing body of horse sports in the nation, at Intermediaire and Grand Prix, as well as the North American Junior & Young Rider Championships. The USEF national championships are also typically used as the final selection competitions for U.S. teams competing at Olympics and World Equestrian Games at big tour and the Pan American Games at small tour.

The current USEF national championships are restricted to U.S. citizens while the USDF regional championships are open to competitors of all nationalities. It was not known whether the USDF national championships would also be open to all competitors.

Hello All,

I am beginning to compile the 2011 ODS year book. I have lots of information about events, I have competition results and I have chapter reports.

What I don’t have is illustrations.

If you were a champion in 2011 (or reserve) a photo of you and your horse would be grand, not necessarily at a show.

Did your horse win an award outside ODS? Again a photo would be nice.

What did your chapter do? Photos of events are very much appreciated.

Does anyone have photos of the Dolly Hannon tests clinic or the L program sessions?

Behind the scene show photos are always interesting.

Don’t forget to include the names of all those in the photo and a brief description of where/when/what.

Also, I need articles, photographs, illustrations of ODS members mentioned elsewhere in the press. I am limited to USDF Connection, USEF Equestrian and Flying Changes.

The year books have been essential to the production of the soon to be published ODS 40th Anniversary book.

Please e-mail to Siobhan@haywardfarm.com or snail mail to

Banks, OR 97106-8830

Many Thanks

Siobhan
