Event changes this weekend due to EHV-1/EHM; Postponed Ride-A-Test in Hillsboro; Klamath Falls Show has moved faculties

May 20th, 2011

Dear ODS Members,

According to their websites, the Washington State Veterinarian’s office has confirmed 5 cases (0 deaths) and the Oregon State Veterinarian’s office has now confirmed 2 cases of EHV-1/EHM in Oregon (the Oregon cases are listed as one in Clackamas County and one in Umatilla County).  These cases are in addition to the other cases being reported on the west coast and in Canada and are directly linked to the cutting event which was held in Utah on Mother’s Day weekend.

At this point, there are still no travel restrictions to non-exposed horses within the states of Oregon and Washington.

We encourage members to review the information and recommendations of the Oregon State Veterinarian posted on their website (link to the Oregon State Veterinarian’s office is http://www.oregon.gov/ODA/AHID/equine_herpes_virus.shtml) and of the Washington State Veterinarian’s office is http://agr.wa.gov/FoodAnimal/AnimalHealth/HotTopics.aspx).   Both State’s Veterinarian’s office will continue to post information on their website if more cases are confirmed and/or if any travel restrictions or other precautions are advised.

Earlier this week our office informed you of two postponed events; we now need to announce another event being postponed and one event that will be occurring, however with a change in facilities.

The Pacific Crest Trail Chapter’s Ride A Test Clinic to be held at Summerfield Farm in Hillsboro, Oregon has been postponed.  The chapter is current working on scheduling logistics and hopes to announce a new date on the ODS website calendar shortly.  The chapter had already previously arranged to host a second Ride-A-Test on August 6th.  If you have questions about this event, please contact Jae Gober at (503) 628-0345 or jjgober@aol.com.

The Cascade Chapter has been in communication with local veterinarians, and due to the safety measures being taken by the owners of the 2 horses in their area who attended the show in Utah, the chapter has decided that it should be safe to host their  Schooling Show as scheduled on 5/21.  Due to the fact that the facility where the show was to be held as self-imposed a quarantine, the show will be moved to an arena at a private residence.  Please contact Janie Steinbock at (541) 884-1425 if you have any questions or if you would like the address of the new location.

At this point, other than the events announced earlier this week and within this e-mail, no other ODS events have been postponed, rescheduled or canceled. Individual show and clinic managers will be communicating with our office; should any other events be cancelled or postponed, our office will notify our membership via e-mail, posting on our Facebook Fan Page and posting on the ODS website’s news page immediately.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly in the ODS Office.
