2011 USDF Region 6 Youth Dressage Overnight Camp hosted by ODS and DevonWood Equestrian Centre

June 6th, 2011

Greetings ODS Members!

We are gearing up for this year’s summer camp! The USDF Region 6 Youth Dressage Overnight Camp, hosted by ODS and DevonWood Equestrian Centre will be held from July 5th – July 7th.

To answer a few frequently asked questions:

  • The minimum age limit for the camp is 8 and the maximum age limit is 21
  • We are currently able to accept 70 riders to the camp
  • Participants will be required to stay overnight at DevonWood Equestrian Centre from when they arrive at DevonWood on Tuesday until their departure on Thursday
  • The price of the camp will be $200; this price includes food, stabling, covers the cost of hiring a licensed EMT to handle First Aid, and several other necessary expenditures to ensure that the camp is a safe and comfortable environment for all those in attendance!
  • Horseless youth may attend the camp for $80; if we have enough campers without horses, we will arrange for additional activities specially for this group

In an effort to minimize the costs of attending this camp, all of the instructors and lecturers have generously donated their travel fees, time for the weekend and are being housed by friends of the camp. Additionally, DevonWood Equestrian Centre has also donated the use of their facility and staff for the weekend.

Our instructors this year include:

  • Nicki Grandia
  • Morgan Barrows
  • Jessica Rattner
  • Natalie Perry
  • Meredith Crawford
  • Shaun Meyers
  • Heather Oleson

In an effort to conserve paper, the registration process will be done entirely via the web and email. Registration for this camp will be first come first serve. The camp is currently OPEN for registration and the closing date will be June 15th.  Registration is at http://camp.devonwoodec.com/ .   After you submit the registration form, we will send you a confirmation email. Once we have all the participants registered, we will send an email with further instructions regarding payment, liability waivers, and the proof of vaccination. We will also be emailing a suggested packing list, directions, contact information for the on-call vet and farrier.  This webpage also lists the approximate schedule of activities and other details.

The camp is also accepting donations towards youth scholarships and stipends to help cover instructor expenses – if you want to contribute, please contact me.

If you have any questions, please contact me directly at jessica.rattner@devonwoodec.com.

Thank you,

Jessica Rattner

2011 Fort Vancouver Dressage Show Cancelled

May 24th, 2011

It is with great regret that the Fort Vancouver Chapter of the Oregon Dressage Society announces that the 2011 Fort Vancouver Dressage Show, May 27-29, is cancelled. We understand that competitor’s have concerns over the recent EHV-1 cases affecting our horse community. We also recognize that many barns/stables have decided to take the preventive measure of a self imposed quarantine, thus keeping their horses home and not allowing ingress or egress at their facilities. With all this in mind, we have decided it is in the best interest of all concerned that the show not be held this year.

Unfortunately, when a show is cancelled several unavoidable expenses are still incurred. Since FVC did not have a specific policy for this occasion, we looked to our parent organization for guidance. ODS policy states, “In the event that an ODS owned show must be cancelled for reasons related to loss of facility, weather, or other natural causes, the amount of the loss ODS will sustain is divided by the number of entries. The dollar amount will be deducted from the refunds for each entry. (est. Aug 2007)”. After reviewing this policy and discussing it as a chapter, FVC has decided to charge the competitors the lesser amount, the $20 non-refundable office fee. While this will cost FVC a substantial amount of money, we feel in these difficult times it is important to give back to the dressage community and our competitors by sharing in these costs. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this cancelation. We hope you will join us next year for the 2012 Fort Vancouver Dressage Show and look forward to seeing you then.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact Rose Newman rose_newman@yahoo.com 360-281-6550.

(February 25, 2011) Lincoln, Nebraska – The Dressage Foundation is pleased to announce that ODS member Nichole Charbonneau of Lacey, Washington, is the 2011 recipient of the $500 Trip Harting Grant.  Nichole is the second recipient of this annual grant and plans to use the funds to continue her education in the United States Dressage Federation ‘L’ Education Program.

Trip’s friends, students, and admirers established this Fund at The Dressage Foundation in his memory.  Trip, a beloved judge, coach and clinician, passed away in August 2008.  The purpose of the Fund is to provide financial assistance for a Pony Club rider to attend the USDF ‘L’ Education Program or Instructor Certification Program.  Applicants must be current or graduate Pony Club members with a B or A rating.

Nichole graduated from Cheney Pony Club (WA) with an H-A rating.  She is currently a dressage instructor, trainer, and competitor, as well as an elementary school teacher.  Nichole is also a USDF Silver Medalist.  About attending the ‘L’ Education Program, Nichole said, “I am eager for the opportunity to focus on the technical analysis, biomechanics, and the polished understanding of what a judge is looking for as they observe from C.  The information I gain in this program will enhance my personal riding skills, riding instructional skills, and will benefit my students.”

The Trip Harting Fund will continue to grow over time as new donations flow into The Dressage Foundation.  The Foundation will continue to award grants based on recommendations of the Selection Committee for as long as the Fund balance allows.  Applications are due to the Foundation in February of each year.

For more information about the Trip Harting Fund or The Dressage Foundation, please contact Jenny Johnson at (402) 434-8585 or visit www.dressagefoundation.org.

USDF Congratulates New “L” Program Graduates

January 20th, 2011

Lexington, KY – The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is pleased to announce that 31 USDF members successfully completed the USDF “L” Education Program between July and December, 2010.

The USDF “L” Education Program is designed to prepare candidates to enter the United States Equestrian Federation “r” Judges Training Program, to qualify individuals to judge schooling shows, and to give competitors, trainers, and instructors greater insight into the evaluative techniques of judging dressage. The program also serves to provide continuing education for licensed judges. The “L” Program is an excellent opportunity for all USDF members to learn from licensed judges in order to improve their scores and view other rides from a judge’s perspective, whether or not they plan on becoming licensed judges themselves. “L” Programs are conducted by a faculty of USDF-approved United States Equestrian Federation “S”-licensed dressage judges who have experience in teaching judge-training programs.
