Support the Championship Shows! Champion/Reserve and Open Class Sponsors Needed

July 27th, 2012

The 31st Annual ODS Championship show is just SIX WEEKS AWAY!  It will occur September 7, 8 and 9 at DevonWood Equestrian Centre. Just two weeks later – the GAIG/USDF Region 6 and Northwest Dressage Championship Show will be held at the same facility, September 20, 21, 22 and 23.

Our family has stepped forward to organize the sponsorship drive for BOTH shows!

As you know, the ODS Championship Show is one of the most important fundraisers that ODS hosts annually.  We are seeking sponsors, vendors and advertisers to support this show and help ODS grow and offer increased opportunities to our membership.  Sponsors are a vital part of the Regional Championships

as well, in that they help sustain the 3-year rotation; when the show gets smaller and expenses stay the same, sponsor support evens things out and stabilizes the entry fees no matter where we are in the rotation!

You can find all pertinent information on sponsoring the ODS Championships on the newly redesigned website at http://www.odschampionshipshow.com. And, a variety of options for showing your support at the Region 6 Championship are just a click away – visit www.dressagenorthwest.org. If it makes it easier for you, please contact one of us directly and we can send you the sponsorship form, and help you choose from the list of available classes!

We do our best to match your personal or corporate needs with your budget and the best benefits, ranging from a hotlink on the website, to being onsite to talk with competitors and spectators, having print advertisements or banners hanging on the show grounds, or even having an arena named for your business.  The sooner you commit to a sponsorship, the sooner we can start promoting your sponsorship!

Thank you in advance, and please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions!

Sponsors needed for Junior/Young Rider Team Championship and Open Show – Fundraiser for the ODS/Linda Acheson Education Fund

July 12th, 2012

SPONSORS NEEDED:  The Friday, August 10 Open classes for the Glisan St. Jr/YR Team Championship and Open show will be used as a fundraiser for the Linda Acheson Educational Fund.  All profits from the Friday classes will be donated to the fund.  Read more about this important fund: http://oregondressage.com/sponsorships.html

We are also looking for sponsors for Saturday open classes, profits from these classes will benefit the ODS Youth Programs, and donations for offsetting the costs of the ODS/Region 6 Youth Overnight Camp at DevonWood the week before.  Sponsorships are $25.00 per class; if you wish, please indicate the level or division you wish to sponsor.

If you would like to sponsor a class, to make a donation towards offsetting costs of the camp, to help us obtain sponsors, or if you have any questions, please contact Gaye McCabe at the address or phone number below.

More about the show:

Each August riders from all over the Pacific Northwest congregate in Oregon for the annual Junior Young Rider Team Championships.  This show not only offers        competition through dressage tests, bur riders also participate in stable management contests, decorating competitions, a written exam and a “jog” as they do at larger international competitions.  The Junior/Young Rider Team Championship Show has added open classes on Friday and Saturday for adults.  Because the show is being held at the DevonWood Equestrian Centre, these newly added open classes are a great opportunity to have a warm up before the ODS Championship Show and/or the USDF Region 6 Championship Show.

Fundraiser for ODS Member going to London Olympics as Volunteer Veterinarian Tech

June 19th, 2012

My name is Rebecca Buehler.  I work out of FarmHill Equestrian Center training horses for dressage and jumping, as well as teaching kids at Sauvie Island Stables, and for Pony Clubs in the area.  It is at FarmHill that I keep my 18.2 hand Dutch/Hanovarian ‘Stretch’ that I acquired last fall and have been teaching dressage.  We hope to be ready for 2nd level at the fall ODS show this year.

This summer I have the privilege of volunteering at the 2012 Olympic Games being held in London, starting July 23, for 3 weeks.  The journey getting there has been a long one as the application process began almost two years ago and was filled with many bumps and hurdles, making me doubt it would ever happen.  However, I can now see that my experience as a Veterinarian Assistant and a Groom led me to be chosen for this role, but I also suspect that having my Pony Club ‘A’ rating and having taken the BHS exams was what ultimately worked in my favor as they are both highly regarded in the UK.

I feel blessed to have not only made it into the Equestrian area of the games, but to have been placed on the Veterinarian team as a Vet Tech, with shifts throughout the entire games.  This will involve behind the scene work, working with veterinary professionals and clinical experts, Admin Team Members, farriers, ambulance operators, FEI officials, competitors, team officials, competitors and their responsible people.  I will be based at the Vet Clinic at Greenwich Park, but will work around the venue as well.
The date is quickly approaching and with it has come the support of the horse community around me.  FarmHill is graciously hosting a Tack Sale fundraiser at the upcoming Letter Perfect Dressage show at the Clark Fairgrounds, June 22-24, to help support my trip – as all expenses are my responsibility and I am reimbursed for none.  I plan to send regular updates of my adventures to anyone interested, but may be limited with the details I am able to share do to security and privacy rules and regulations.  If you are interested in supporting me or being on an email list for my adventures, let me know at rebuehler@gmail.com.

Erin Alberda – ODS Member on her way to Gladstone, NJ to compete in the 2012 Paralympic Selection Trials

June 1st, 2012
I am a Seattle-area based disabled equestrian, working towards representing the United States in London at the 2012 Paralympic Games.  First stop – 2012 PARA-EQUESTRIAN DRESSAGE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP and PARALYMPIC SELECTION TRIAL in Gladstone, New Jersey.
I became involved in para equestrian in 2006, and since then have had the incredible experience of competing (and winning!) at multiple international competitions in North America and even Australia.  I had the incredible experience of competing at the 2010 World Equestrian Games, the first year that disabled riders were included in this amazing event.  The Paralympics are the pinnacle of competition for every athlete, and I now have my sights firmly set on London!
I live with a rare condition that is a result of a genetic condition that caused low muscle tone and some impairment of coordination, that combined with nerve damage resulting from a severe illness in college.  Since I have lived with this condition for some time, I have adapted fairly well, and many people are unaware that I do not feel my feet or parts of my hands, or that I have muscle weakness.
One of my greatest joys in having been a part of the para equestrian program over the past 6 years is seeing the sport grow, the quality of riding and horses improve, ever-increasing acceptance of para athletes at able-bodied events, and push for us to “raise the bar”.  I am personally thrilled to have the opportunity to partner with a top quality horse, and be working with a trainer who is herself a top competitor.

Currently, my head is swimming in details. Hotels, bran mashes, ulcergard, adequan, health certificates, coolers-blankets-sheets, saddle pads (laundry?), whites, nosebands, snaffle, curb, bridoon, grain rations, supplements, rubber bands, quick braid, fly spray, ripped paddock boots (argh)…and trying to reassure myself it will ALL WORK OUT!!!

Rocco shipped to California today. I am hoping to send a small container of his “stuff” with him. His journey to the LA area is approximately 24 hours. I fly down tomorrow (Saturday) and meet up with him upon his arrival. We will use our time in California to rest, but also to prepare. Short, sweet, focused rides for Rocco, and a chance for me to strategize.

I will end up flying out on a red-eye June 5, and Rocco will fly out the morning of June 6 to NJ.

I have been asked to keep a journal at Barnby notes – if you are not familiar with Barnby notes, do check them out! I will be using that space to reflect on the training aspects of this adventure…it has been such a learning process as I have put my full faith in Rocco.

Rocco is doing wonderfully, and for that I am thankful. We finally found the “medium canter” button (although there is still more in there), and now we have to re-locate the “canter half-halt” button, but so it goes. It is always a balance (literally and figuratively!).

Donations and Sponsorships:

I am still looking for your support to make this trip a success. Tax-deductible donations can be made through my fiscal sponsor – Little Bit TRC – call them at (425) 882-1554, or visit their website littlebit.org.   Immediate financial need is for donations towards travel expenses – airfare, hotel, meals, as well as Rocco’s return trip and getting my coach, also an ODS Member, Alyssa Pitts, airfare. Please help make this dream come true!  I have set a goal of raising $10,000 and we are just about half-way there.

We have a fantastic dressage community here in the Pacific Northwest, do not ever doubt it!

Thank you,

Erin Alberda

Info on the ODS/Linda S. Acheson Education Fund

October 6th, 2011

The ODS / Linda S. Acheson Education Fund

The Linda Acheson Education Fund exists to support educational opportunities for ODS members and dressage enthusiasts.  When it was created, founder Linda Acheson and subsequently the ODS Board established the goal to gather $50,000 in principal before expending interest on the fund in support of educational programs.  So far we’ve reached $36,000 — and we need your help to reach the current goal of $50,000 and make this a vital part of ODS educational programming!

The Linda S. Acheson ODS Education fund was established in 1998 and was renamed in 2004 as a memorial to Linda Acheson, former ODS President, Treasurer, and “L program” graduate.

As a Certified Public Accountant, Linda was instrumental in modernizing the ODS office and the financial records. Additionally, Linda was an advocate of rider and instructor education. She organized the first ODS certified instructor program and supported the ODS “L” Education Program, and judged many schooling shows.

Linda established this fund during her tenure as president. Her intent was to create a specific account where the earnings could be used to finance educational events and programs—in whole, or part; for the benefit of ODS members. Upon her death, the education fund name was changed to recognize Linda, and it received numerous contributions in honor of her memory.

The Linda Acheson Education Fund is not a “restricted fund” in the sense of an endowment, however the ODS board agreed in principle that the funds were dedicated to the educational mission Linda intended.

The goal is to raise additional monies through fundraisers or bequests/gifts to reach a point where the income from the fund be used to sponsor educational programs. Linda estimated, and the Board of Directors subsequently adopted that the principal of the fund reach and be maintained at $50,000 (as of September 1, 2011, the fund is approximately $36,000). At the point the income from the fund may be utilized for educational activities, the ODS Board of Directors will establish an advisory panel to select projects or programs to support.

Be on the watch for fundraisers for this fund that will be held at the upcoming ODS Fall Festival, including a raffle and a wine-pull.  If you would like to make a direct contribution to the fund, you may make an online donation using PayPal (go to this webpage: http://oregondressage.com/sponsorships.html) or you can mail a check, written out to the Oregon Dressage Society Education Fund and send it to ODS Office, 880 NE 25th Ave, Ste 2-173, Hillsboro, OR 97124.

Please contact the ODS office for details or if you would like to volunteer for marketing and/or fundraising on behalf of the fund.
