EHV-1 / EHM Alert: 5/19 Demo in LaGrande is postponed; 5/21 Show in Tangent rescheduled

May 19th, 2011

Dear ODS Members,

Due to the news of a confirmed case of neurological herpes virus in Oregon and the State Veterinarian Don Hanson urging horse owners to take precautions, several of our chapters have decided to postpone or to reschedule events which were on the calendar for later this week or for this coming weekend.  The state veterinarian’s website contains up to date information about the disease in our state as well as informational links to disease information and potential signs of the disease – the website address is: http://www.oregon.gov/ODA/AHID/equine_herpes_virus.shtml.

The confirmed case of the neurological herpes virus (Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy) or EHM, is directly linked to the cutting event held in Ogden, Utah from April 30 through May 8, 2011.  A number of other cases have been confirmed in surrounding states including, Washington, Idaho, California and Colorado.  EHM is a highly contagious neurological virus that can cause severe neurological symptoms in horses. There are no restrictions on the movement of non-exposed horses within Oregon at this time.

The first event which will be postponed is the Demo of the Geometry of the Dressage Ring and How to Ride It which was to be held on 5/19 at Hasel Farms, 61240 Crooked Creek Road, LaGrande, OR 97850. For more information or to be notified of the rescheduled date, please contact Karen Hasel at (541) 963-9654.

The second event which has already been rescheduled is Salute to Dressage League Show which was to be held 5/21 at the Cygnet Farm, 7501 Wagner Creek Rd Tangent OR 97540. The show will now be held on June 18th, start time of 9:00 AM.  If you have questions about an entry or for more information about the show, please contact Rachel Merusi, manager at (541) 830-4754.

At this point, no other events have been postponed, rescheduled or canceled. Individual show and clinic managers will be communicating with our office; should any other events be cancelled or postponed, our office will notify our membership via e-mail, posting on our Facebook Fan Page and posting on the ODS website’s news page immediately.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me directly in the ODS Office.

Warmest Regards,

What a Thousand Friends Can Do

Together, we can continue the work of the Equamore Foundation, one of the longest running horse rescues in the United States*, to accomplish its mission to provide a safety net for unwanted, abused, abandoned, neglected, and aged horses who are without alternatives for their care, while fostering compassion and responsibility for horses through education, outreach, intervention, and placement of horses in need to caring guardians.

With a thousand friends, the Foundation can increase public awareness of the plight of abused and neglected animals and encourage everyone connected with horses to develop a sense of long term responsibility for the animals who have given their youth and health to work, serve, and entertain their owners.

Thanking You in Advance,
Nancy Ash, President, Equamore Board of Trustees

**The ODS Board voted in the fall of 2009 to allow articles to be published on the ODS Website on behalf of established local 501(c)3 equine welfare organizations.  While it is a part of the ODS mission statement to encourage welfare of the horse, ODS does not endorse any particular organization.
