December President Note

Elections were held during the month of October. The Nominating Committee was able to secure a full slate of candidates with the exception of the South Region Rep. Luckily there were write ins and a full board has been elected. I would like to thank the three members who stepped forward as the Elections Committee and counted the votes - big thank you to Joyce Stride, Anne Stevens and Kelsi Burkhardt.

Later in the Board Meeting the incumbent Officers were all re-elected:

The subject of changing the ODS Championship Qualifying Policy was reviewed and discussed. The Championship Committee recommended not changing the policy and the board voted unanimously not to change it.

Discussion occurred about how to encourage shows in neighboring states to seek ODS approval. The board voted to change the policy for these shows seeking ODS approval as follows: they will still pay the ODS recognition fee but they will only be charged the ODS Awards Fee ($1.00 per ride) for ODS members. BE SURE TO PUT YOUR ODS MEMBER NUMBER ON YOUR ENTRY FORMS FOR THESE SHOWS!!!

The subject of the ODS Championship Show date was discussed. The Championship Show Committee and the ODS Board voted unanimously not to change the date from the second weekend in September.

ODS completed our USDF Capital Campaign Pledge of $20,000 with a final payment of $7,389.00. This pledge was to be satisfied over a five year period and we were able to finish early thanks to the profits from the Championship Show and the donations of the following chapters and programs:

CCTA, COC, PCTC, MVC, State of Jefferson Chapter, ODS Youth Programs.

The ODS Committees which were created at the spring meeting are gradually getting started on their various projects. Rose Newman, Chair of the ODS League Show Committee reported the committee is working on ways to ensure the chapters and organizations putting on league shows are following the guidelines and rules published in the Omnibus. Any input or questions about league shows should be directed to Rose or the committee: Kaye Phaneuf, Siobhan or myself.

Ed Miller, Corinne Stonier and Donna Thayer are also working on the revision of the Policy Manual.

Rose Newman, Corinne Stonier, Gaye McCabe and Marsha Williams will represent ODS at the Region VI Mini Convention in Portland November 22. In early December Rose Newman, Corinne Stonier, Ed Miller, Francy Haupt and Marsha Williams will travel to the USDF Convention to represent ODS and/or Region VI. Bara Tuohino Funk will also attend as USDF Treasurer. The next column will cover the reports from these meetings which promise to be full of controversy and decision making regarding the Performance Standard Proposal, various rule changes, increases in dues and fees for USDF, among other issues.

I sure hope you all have been enjoying the summer. The show season is nearly over for the year with just our Championship, Region 6 Championship and a few fall league shows left to go.Our Annual Awards Banquet will be held Saturday, September 13 in conjunction with the Championship show. Tickets have been for sale for the past month so if you still don’t have one contact the ODS Office because we want to see you there. The service, food and atmosphere at the Holiday Inn in Wilsonville have been very good the past two years. In addition there will be special awards presentations, a silent auction and plenty of time to relax and socialize. Volunteers are still and always needed at the Championship show so please contact our volunteer coordinator and sign up to help and hopefully see everyone having their best rides of the year.

I am happy to announce the recipients of the college scholarships for 2008. The money for the scholarships is raised each year by the Young Riders at the Dressage for the Ages show. I’d like to thank Gaye McCabe for her work in putting on these shows and making this scholarship program possible. Each of these young people in addition to riding has accomplished academic success, participated in leadership, community service, and many have participated in inter-scholastic sports in addition to riding not only in dressage but other disciplines as well. I love reading the scholarship applications and essays and have enjoyed participating in the selection for the past few years. This year’s scholarship have been awarded to the following:

  • Alexandria Lindahl - University of Portland
  • Alycia Smith - University of Findlay
  • Jordan Martin - not available at deadline
  • Angeline Desquesnes - Linn Benton Community College
  • Amy Rufener - University of Washington
We were very sad to cancel the Linda Acheson Education Fund Benefit show due to an inadequate number of entries. I would like to thank the people who put a lot of time into organizing the show this year: Kim Barker, Siobhan Barker and Christopher Main. The ODS Board will be considering how to go forth with the program to raise the fund to the level of capital required to allow the funds to be used. Input from members would be very beneficial and welcome. Please contact your Directors and Regional reps with your ideas about this important project.
We are still seeking an ODS Treasurer. This does not have to be an elected director the bylaws allow a person with qualifications to be appointed. Please contact me or any board member if you are interested in helping secure the future of ODS and dressage in Oregon.
I hope to see you at the Championship Show. Good luck to those of you competing and thanks to the many committee members and volunteers who really are the ones making this show a success year after year.

The ODS Annual Celebration and Awards Banquet will be held Saturday, September 13th at the Holiday Inn in Wilsonville, OR.

This year we celebrate the 37th Anniversary of the Oregon Dressage Society. The ODS Special Awards Winners will be revealed. In addition, many of the ODS Chapters are providing fun and overflowing baskets for a silent auction that is sure to be fun!

Clinic Information
If you pre-registered to audit, your name will be on the registration list provided to the organizer and a pre-printed name tag will be available for you at the clinic which will serve as your ticket. If you walk in, there will be registration forms and blank name tags at the registration desk. Preregistration is strongly encouraged to facilitate planning, and current USDF members save up to $15 if they pre-register. For the clinic, walk-ins should plan to bring a chair if possible, just in case.

CLINIC SCHEDULE
8 am – approx. 5 pm Saturday and Sunday — NOTE that there is NO FRIDAY LECTURE.
The rides will start at training level and move up the levels from there.
A more detailed schedule will be posted when riders are selected for this clinic.

VIDEOTAPING/PHOTOGRAPHS
Riders may have their sessions videotaped for their own private use. Still photography for private use only is permitted. No video or photographic image from the clinic may be sold or distributed in any form without the prior expressed written consent of USDF.

Arabians in Motion Sporthorse Show is Seeking Volunteers

Dear ODS Member:

I am a member of ODS and the volunteer coordinator the upcoming Arabians in Motion Sporthorse Classic and Arabian Horse Association Sporthorse Regional Championships. The show is being held at the DevonWood Equestrian Center in Sherwood, Oregon, August 15 -17.

The classes will include dressage, hunter/jumper classes, in hand sport horse classes and carriage driving.  Many participants in this show are also ODS members.

We are seeking volunteers. I need ring stewards, scorers, gate keepers, scribes and traffic directors.

Olympic Coverage on Television

NBC Universal will be airing 3,600 hours of coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, including the equestrian events, which will be taking place in Hong Kong. This total amount of coverage will be more than the hours of coverage for all the Olympic Games since 1960 Rome combined. All Broadcasts will also be in HD.  These times are EST, so be sure to switch to Oregon time!
