President's Note -- June 2005

It’s now the first part of May and show season is well under way! I’ve been looking forward to my first show of the year but a minor injury may prevent me from participating. I’m surprised how much I’ve been looking forward to this show. This realization, as well as the record crowds and stellar performances at the Dressage World Cup have made me reflect on the value of competition.

I understand that my outlook is probably colored by the fact that I don’t have to keep clients happy, sell prospects, or boost a reputation as an instructor. Whether it be a schooling, league or recognized show, I think (and hope) that the majority of ODS members are in a similar situation. In any event, here’s my take….

I have no illusions that I’ll win big prizes, or gather honors for my riding. It would be nice to do well, and that is my end goal, but I’m not going to be despondent if it doesn’t work out that way. Rather a competition helps me to focus --- being diligent in both the time spent in preparation and in working on my problem areas. It’s gratifying to prove to your self that you’ve mastered certain skills, or at least made progress towards that end.

Additionally, a show is a social occasion. You don’t participate in dressage unless you love it. Where else can you be with so many like-minded people who are all having similar experiences? I’d like to think that competitions are a place to meet old and new friends and hope that our shows avoid “snob” atmosphere. That’s never been my experience. I was heartened to hear newcomers from California remark at our annual banquet how friendly everyone was with each other.

The “movers and shakers” of the dressage world are found at the competitions. They might be riding or instructing, but they are even more likely to be the show secretary, show manager, judge or technical delegate. These people have direct input to rule and test changes. Whether you compete or not, these people can affect the type of bits you find in catalogues and the length of whip you’ll see in stores.

Happy riding,

John
